Large Painting of Hermann Goring Painted by Hungarian Artist Imre Goth in 1933, Goring Being so Unhappy with the Painting That Goth had to Flee Germany, a very interesting and large oil painting showing the leader of the German Luftwaffe, Hermann Goring, seated in his library in a smoking jacket. The portrait shows a very puffy faced and drawn figure, Goring said to be un-happy about this as it made him look like a morphine addict which historically was the case. The painting is housed in a large wooden frame with a Hermann Goring Luftwaffe machine embroidered other ranks cuff title mounted in the lower section. The canvas measures 89 x 110cms, frame 121 ½ x 140cms. Imre Goth was a former WW1 fighter pilot and served alongside Hermann Goring during WW1. The pair were said to be friends. Goth was commissioned to paint this portrait of Goring in 1933, at this time Goring was a leading figure in the Third Reich. Goring was said to be so unhappy with his portrayal by Goth that he demanded for alterations to be made, which Goth refused to do. Goth was forced to flee Germany and brought the painting with him to the UK. He instructed a friend that on his death the painting was to be destroyed, which did not happen. Goth travelled back and forth to Germany pre-war, but when war broke out, he was detained in the Isle of Mann due to his nationality. Goth was ethnically Jewish and a professed anti-nazi. It is argued by art historians that this work was possibly done to be little or to ridicule Goring, as it is unlike any of Goth’s other artworks. The painting is shown and discussed in more detail in the reference work “Their Safe Haven – Hungarian artists in Britain from the 1930’s”. Provenance: Warner Dailey collection.
