Portrait of Nicolette at Paultons Square signed 'Devas' (lower left) oil on canvas 51 x 40.5cmFootnote: Provenance The Artist's family Sale; Christie's, South Kensington, 1 July 2004, lot 44 The sitter for this portrait, Nicolette Devas (1911-1987), is remembered as a distinguished author and painter whose sister, Caitlin, married Dylan Thomas. Born to Mary Yvonne Majolier and Irish bohemian poet-philosopher, Francis Macnamara, Nicolette was the eldest of four children. In 1916, an ill-fated attempt to establish a ‘Republic of Macnamaraland’ and the pursuit of various cultural and political escapades saw Francis Macnamara desert his family, leaving them destitute. Mary and her children later settled in Blashford on the edge of the New Forest, where they were close neighbours of Augustus John and his family. The Macnamara family formed a close relationship with the John family, and Augustus John would later use his influence and money to enable Nicolette to attend the Slade School of Fine Art, where she met Anthony Devas, later marrying him in 1931. Throughout the 1930s Nicolette established herself as an artist, showing her works at the New English Art Club, the Royal Academy and the London Group. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, she held her first one-woman show at the Storran Gallery.

Despite two crippling bankruptcies, Richards is remembered for his significant contribution to the publishing business. In 1909, Henry Lamb produced the present portrait, along with drawings of the poets A.E. Houseman and John Mason, for Grant Richards during a visit to his home, near the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall.

Incident at Ascot signed with initials 'A.R.T' (lower left) watercolour, pastel and gouache (Dimensions: 44 x 40cm )(44 x 40cm )Footnote: The last person to win an Olympic Gold Medal for oil painting in 1948, Alfred Reginald Thomson RA is most renowned for his work as a War Artist to the Royal Air Force between 1940 and 1944. Profoundly deaf from birth, Thomson was born in Bangalore, India, to parents George and Florence Thomson. During Alfred’s early childhood, the family moved to Margate where he attended the Royal School for Deaf Children and became fluent in sign language. Displeased that he had not learned to speak, however, Thomson’s father later enrolled him into a small private oral school in Brondesbury, London. Despite his fluency in sign language, his ability to speak and his enormous contribution to British painting, Thomson was reductively dubbed the ‘deaf and dumb’ artist by the British press. Although he attended the John Hassell School of Commercial Art in Kensington, Thomson failed to pass the entry exam for the Royal Academy and was largely self-taught. By 1945, however, Thomson was elected as a Royal Academician and was one of the most sought-after British portrait artists.
Portrait of Nora Mabel Brownsword a note to the reverse: 'Gwyneth / with love from / John / Xmas 1932' pencil on paper (Dimensions: 28.5 x 22.5cm)(28.5 x 22.5cm)Footnote: Provenance The Artist, with whom gifted to Gwyneth Johnstone, 1932, thence by descent to the present owner Nora Brownsword was born in Nottingham into a wealthy family of lace manufacturers. As well as being a talented musician, by 1913, she was modelling for the artist, Augustus John, who used her as one of the models for Lyric Fantasy , c.1913-14 (Tate Britain). Their relationship extended beyond that of artist and model and by 1914, Nora was pregnant with John’s child. Augustus already had seven children, five by his late wife Ida, and two by his muse, Dorelia McNeill. Their daughter, Gwyneth, was born in 1914 and various options were suggested as to how to solve the problem. These included exporting mother and daughter to France, adopting Gwyneth into the John family, on the condition that Brownsword surrendered any right to contact, and arranging a marriage between Nora and John Hope-Johnstone, the former tutor of John’s sons. Brownsword rejected these offers, although she did adopt the name ‘Johnstone’ for her daughter. She later married John Back, who was from a wealthy family of East Anglian landowners. The marriage was not a success and John left, leaving Nora as the chatelaine of his house and farms at Great Hautbois, Norfolk. Brownsword was fortunately of independent means and was able to provide Gwyneth with a comfortable upbringing between Norfolk and London by herself. Gwyneth was sent to St Felix School, Southwold and whilst here, she saw pictures by Christopher Wood and other 20 th century modernists. Between 1933-38, she attended the Slade School of Fine Art and later studied with the cubist painter, André Lhote. She eventually shared a London studio with her father who painted her portrait (sold in these rooms, 26 April 2019, lot 278 for £26,000). Gwyneth went on to become an established and respected painter, showing with the London Group and the Women’s International Art Club. She also had many solo exhibitions at The Portal Gallery, London. Mother and daughter were inseparable and the artist, Julian Trevelyan, affectionally referred to them as “the cavewomen”, on account of their rejection of modern-day conventions. When her mother died, Gwyneth tied her coffin to the roof of the car and drove to Norfolk from London by herself. They are buried together in the church of St Theobald at Great Hautbois, Norfolk. We are grateful to Dr David Boyd Haycock for his assistance with catalguing this lot

Portrait de Stravinsky signed and dated 'Alb Gleizes 21' (lower right) pencil and coloured crayons (Dimensions: 21 x 14cm)(21 x 14cm)Footnote: Provenance The Artist's Studio Sale; Sotheby's, London, 6 December 1978, lot 434 Madame Albert Gleizes titled the present lot in preparation for the Sotheby's sale in 1978 A hugely significant figure in 20th-century art, Albert Gleizes is remembered for his artistic endeavours, his theoretical treatise, and for being the self-proclaimed founder of Cubism. In 1912, Gleizes formed The Section d’Or (‘Golden Section’), a collective of painters, sculptors, poets and critics associated with Cubism and Orphism. The same year, alongside Jean Metzinger, Gleizes authored Du “Cubisme” (About Cubism), the first major discourse concerning Cubism, in which they wrote “An object does not have one absolute shape, it has several…too bad if logic is offended”. Although this pencil portrait of composer Igor Stravinsky is diminutive in comparison to his later work; defining characteristics of Gleizes’ work, including a disregard for “logic”, juxtaposed geometric forms and multiple perspective, are evident. In 1914, Gleizes completed a large-scale portrait of Stravinsky. Bequeathed by art collector Richard S. Zeisler in 2007, it is now part of MoMA’s permanent collection in New York. In 1999, a preparatory charcoal sketch for this painting was sold at Christie’s, New York, 23 February 1999, lot 16, for USD 10,350.
