Nicola Marschall (American/Alabama, 1829-1917), "Mrs. Moses Waring, nee Sarah Ellen Smoot (1811-1870)", c. 1850, oil on canvas, unsigned, 29 1/4 in. x 24 1/4 in., oval giltwood frame Note: Nicola Marschall spent nearly two years as the guest of the Waring family in Mobile, Alabama from 1849-51. During this time, he painted portraits of several members of the family, including the portrait offered here of the matriarch, Sarah Ellen Smoot Waring, wife of Moses Waring, who had made his fortune in the salt business. The Waring family lived on the corner of Government and Claiborne Streets; their home was filled with beautiful mid-19th century furniture, such as the Waring Family Gothic Carved Rosewood Center Table by Alexander Jackson Davis, sold in these rooms and now located at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Marschall later supported the Confederate cause, designing the original Stars and Bars flag and official grey uniform.

Carausius a very unusual coin an antoninianus struck on an earlier flan containing silver, which is visible, portions of the radiate crown, hair and forehead are visible on the reverse, 'F' in left field, the 'O' not visible and probably obliterated by the overstriking aforementioned, ML in exergue, London Mint, if this reverse is Pax and an 'X' is visible but in the wrong position, the deity, stands left on groundline, holding olive-branch but the 'sceptre' looks to be an upright spear, Sear 13639Avar., the moneyer knowing he was overstriking gave a heavy blow, producing an excellent portrait, rare, overstriking mostly on legend, GVF
