Montague J. Dawson (1895-1973), Öl auf Leinwand, u.li. sign., auf der Rahmung Titelei: SIR LANCELOT "tis not the gales, but the set of your sails, that determines the way you go", verso etikettiert von Frost & Reed, hier als Titelei: wind in the rigging (Wind in der Takelage), Bemaßung: 28 x 42 inches (71,2 x 106,68 cm). Provenance: - Frost & Reed, London, Reg. No. 41569 , mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit aus dem Atelier des Künstlers - Im Besitz der Fortnum and Mason Collection in London - Im Besitz von Garfield Howard Weston / Canada - Privatcollection Rhein-Main Gebiet Montague J. Dawson (1895-1973), oil on canvas, l.l. signed., title on the frame: SIR LANCELOT "tis not the gales, but the set of your sails, that determines the way you go", labeled on the reverse by Frost & Reed, here as a title: wind in the rigging, dimensions: 28 x 42 inches (71.2 x 106.68 cm). "The Race Home". The clipper Sir Lancelot in 1869 commanded by Captain Richard "Dickie" Robinson in stormy weather. The famous clipper with its much vaunted slenderness and elegant lines is not the focus here. Dawson focuses on a scenario on deck - hanging the viewer in the rigging - or giving him the view of a seagull - and thus takes him through a raging, stormy sea in a thundery atmosphere. The protagonist of this work is the wide-legged and upright captain Richard Robinson on the deck of the three-master, who instructs his crew and skillfully maneuvers them. In this scenario, Dawson reflects the theme of the painting: not the storms, but the setting of your sails determines your path. Famed and widely acclaimed for this talent, "Dickie" Robinson sets a new record between China and London in the 1869 Clipper Race with Sir Lancelot. Considering the time of year and the distance, it is agreed that the Sir Lancelot's 1869 crossing was the fastest from China to England. The vast majority of his works, particularly the 19th century tea clippers, depict specific ships at a specific location on a predetermined itinerary. In this case, however, it is the "portrait" of the famous "Dickie" Robinson with his ship, the Sir Lancelot, at the 1869 clipper race. Seven ships were primarily involved in this race, including the Ariel, Leander, Thermopylae, Chrysolite and Stornoway. Dawson documents this famous event in several paintings, of which this work is the centerpiece. Provenance: - Frost & Reed, London, Reg. 41569 , with large Likely from the artist's studio - Owned by the Fortnum and Mason Collection in London - Owned by Garfield Howard Weston / Canada - Private collection Rhein-Main area
