sIR JOSEPH EDGAR BOEHM BT (1834-1890) bRONZE MEDAL OF THOMAS CARLYLE, 1875 stuck to commemorate his 75th birthday obverse: bust left, THOMAS CARLYLE reverse: COMMEMORATION - DECEMBER 4 - 1875 5.6cm diameter literature: L. XXIX, fig. 2. note: Boehm sculpted the bronze statue of Carlyle, erected in 1882, in the Chelsea Embankment Gardens, of which a marble copy is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. george T. Morgan (1845-1925), who engraved the dies after Boehm's design, was born in Birmingham and worked for many years as a die engraver at Messrs. J.S. & A.B. Wyon. However he moved to America in 1876 and is best known for designing the 'Morgan' silver dollar. He was appointed Chief Engraver of the Philadelphia Mint in 1917.

The sitter was the daughter of William Spencer, 2nd Baron Spencer of Wormleighton, and his wife, Penelope, daughter of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton. She married Henry, Earl of Drogheda.
