Printed sketch/portrait of The Hon. Alfred Lyttelton from The Country Gentleman July 25th 1885, 40 by 26.5cm., 15 1/2 by 10 1/2in.; sold with the original printed text that accompanied the sketch/portrait in the magazine (2) Alfred, with his brother Edward, played for Old Etonians in the 1876 F.A. Cup Final and replay. They both played for England. Alfred also played First Class cricket for Oxford University, Middlesex and England.

A London 1908 Olympic Games bronze prize medal awarded to the British heavyweight boxer Frederick Parks, bronze, designed by Bertram MacKennal, the obverse with two young women crowning a victorious athlete with a laurel wreath, the reverse with St. George, patron Saint of England, slaying the dragon, the edge inscribed THIRD PRIZE, HEAVY WEIGHT BOXING, in original fitted case stamped gilt OLYMPIC GAMES, THIRD PRIZE, HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING, LONDON, 1908; sold together with a brooch from Parks Collection with a 1908 dated coin & portrait of King Edward VII (2) Frederick Mostyn Parks (1885-1945) won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division of the London 1908 Olympic Games. Parks lost his semi-final to fellow British boxer Sydney Evans. Frederick's older brother Frank was also a successful amateur boxer whose career included fights in America. Both brothers were fellow member of the Polytechnic Boxing Club.

44 copies of 'Pastime with which is incorporated Football', running from No. 605 Vol. XXIV December 26 1894 to No. 653 Vol. XXVI November 27 1895 Missing 4 copies Nos. 618, 629, 638 and 639, good to very good condition, slight damage to the rear few pages of No. 633 The issues cover, amongst other things, the debate and subsequent schism between Rugby Union and Rugby League, results for football (professional and amateur), rugby, golf, cricket, athletics, hockey and cycling, with further coverage of curling, bob sled, US College Football, and some controversial items such as the enforced closure of both the Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers grounds after attacks on referees and bribery of officials, and a report on an England Scotland international football match. Each issue has a photographic portrait of a well-known sportsman or sportswoman together with a biography of their sporting history. There are also a number of photographs and cartoons including one of the English and Scottish rugby teams. The outer covers contain adverts for sporting equipment, clothing, books and events. A number of these issues originally came from the Royal Gunpowder Factory Library in Waltham Abbey.

* HUGH ADAM CRAWFORD RSA (SCOTTISH 1898 - 1982), PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM ARMOUR oil on canvas, signed with monogram 65cm x 52cm Framed and under glass. Notes: Hugh Adam Crawford was an influential and charismatic figure in the 1920/30s Glasgow art scene. During a long teaching career, Crawford influenced and inspired many notable students including Joan Eardley, Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun. Crawford was born in Busby, East Renfrewshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he was taught by Maurice Greiffenhagen from 1919 to 1923. He briefly moved to London to study part-time at the Central School of Art and at Saint Martin's School of Art before returning to Glasgow in 1925 to join the staff at the Glasgow School of Art. He eventually became Head of Painting there, a post he was to hold until 1948. As well as developing a strong style of portrait painting Crawford also painted murals. The sitter is the artist William Armour,who studiied at the GSA and went on to teach there. In 1927 Armour married Mary Nicol Steel (Mary Armour). Although the canvas is undated, we believe it will have been completed in the mid 1920's

Note : An extremely rare example of the work of James Torrance. Only two previous works by Torrance are recorded at auction in the last 20 years - "Honesty" sold by Christie's Glasgow 20th April 1995 lot 975 selling for £5500 and "The Blue Pidgeon" sold by Sotheby's 15th April 2002 lot 47 for £1600 (both hammer prices). - source www.artinfo.com .The sitter for "The Day Dreamer" is believed to be Torrance's daughter who also sat for "The Blue Pidgeon". James Torrance was born in Glasgow and worked in London for many years as a highly successful portrait painter and illustrator. His work includes illustrations for 'Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales' edited by Sir George Douglas (1893). On his return to Scotland he married the flower painter Louise Ellen Perman (tutor of James Stuart Park) and they lived in Helensburgh. The James Torrance Memorial Award is presented each year by the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI)
JOHN HENDERSON (SCOTTISH 1860 - 1924), CROFTERS DWELLINGS, AYRSHIRE oil on canvas, signed 71 x 112cm Framed Label verso: Scottish National Exhibition, Glasgow, 1911 Note: John Henderson was a Glaswegian landscape and portrait painter. His brother was the painter Joseph Morris Henderson RSA (1863-1936) and his father was Joseph Henderson RSW (1832-1908). His sister, Marjory Henderson was the wife of William McTaggart. Henderson was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and then obtained a MA at the University of Glasgow. He exhibited at The Royal Glasgow Institute, The Royal Scottish Academy and The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolor. In Liverpool he exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery and in Manchester at The City Art Gallery. He also assisted at the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1901-1911 and served as a Governor of the Glasgow School of Art from 1906 to 1918. He was an acting director of the GSA 1914 - 18 and then full director from 1918 - 1924. John Henderson's paintings appear at auction relatively infrequently but Sotheby's sold "In The Highlands" (a 71 x 93cm oil on canvas) for £12,000 (hammer) lot 156, 15.04.97.
An 18th Century Carved Mahogany Jewish Portrait Panel depicting the bust of 'Flavius Josephus'; a first-century Romano-Jewish scholar, historian and hagiographer. The bust recessed in an oval surround inscribed with name to the top and raised on a brick-work pedestal having a shield emblazoned with face mask, book, flag & flaming urn propped against it's foot. Believed to be carved after a 1732 edition of translated Josephus works featuring a printed illustration of the subject from which the carving is based, 10 ins x 6 ins (25.5 cm x 15 cms).
A Large 16th/17th Oil on Canvas: Full length Portrait of a Lady of Eminence possibly Marguerite de Lorraine, Princess of Conti, stood before a draped curtain with landscape beyond. The subject dressed in finery with a pearl coronet, high ruffled lace collar and elaborate dress trimmed with strings of pearls, 93 ins x 54 ins (236 cms X 137 cms), in a moulded black frame 99 ins x 60 ins (252 cm x 253 cms).
Possibly William Larkin (flourished early 1580's to 1619). A Fine Early 17th Century English Oil on Panel: Head & Shoulders Portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh inscribed ANo 1615 AT top right. The subject wearing a black button fronted doublet with elaborate cut work ornamentation and a high starched white collar edged in delicate lace trim. The panel re-backed with cradle, and inscribed on verso; 'In ink on the back of the original panel was written "Sir John Boileau" and this was one of the old pictures in the house (Ketteringham Park) when the Boileau bought it around 1850, and was there when they came. It was bought by me in 1947 at the sale. The house at that time belonged to Lady Jane Grey's husband's family etc. This portrait by experts is said to be English work. I had it cleaned and back 1965, CGH Perks'. 19 ins x 14 ins (48.5 cm x 35.5 cms) in a moulded black frame 27½ ins x 22½ ins (70 cm x 57 cms).

The subject depicted wearing a black doublet with ruffled white collar & cuffs holding an open book, inscribed top left; AETIS SVA 43 and top right ANDo 1602. The oak panel with paper label to verso printed 'FROM T RUSHWORTH & SON, Carvers and Gilders, Sadler Street, Durham, Oil Paintings cleaned, lined and restored by special process without injury', 23 ins x 17¾ ins (58.5 cm x 45 cms), in a moulded gilt frame, 26 ins x 21 ins (66 cm x 53 cms).*
A Late 17th Century Oil on Canvas; Head & Shoulders Portrait of Rev. Thomas Jolly very similar to one of 'The Mansfield Portraits' (a collection of fifty 19th century paintings by Gustavas Ellinthorpe Sintzenich of Exeter (C. 1821-1892) copied from original portraits of Clergymen ejected from the Church of England by the Act of Uniformity AD 1662). The subject holding the bible inscribed Gal:2.20 along the top, with inscriptions; 'Anno Domini 1693, AE SVCE: 63' top left and 'Christus Cruci-fixus Cordi-fixus' top right. The canvas inscribed on verso Revd. Thomas Jollie, 30½ ins x 25 ins (78 cm x 63.5 cms).*
Circle of John Michael Wright (1617-1694). An Oil on Canvas: Half Length Portrait of a Young Gentleman sat in landscape. The subject donning a long curly brown wig, a red shawl gathered and buttoned at the shoulder, over a white blouson shirt with lace cravat, 30½ ins x 25 ins (77.5 cm x 64 cms). Set in a 17th century moulded black frame with parcel gilt carving, 37 ins x 32 ins (94 cm x 82 cms).
Follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641). An 18th Century Oil on Canvas, Circa 1720: Head & Shoulders Portrait of King Charles I in Three Positions, also known as the Triple portrait of Charles I, after the original painted in 1635 or 1636, currently part of the Royal Collection, 32 ins x 42 ins (82 cm x 107 cms), in a later moulded frame 37½ ins x 47 ins (95 cm x 120 cms).

Set in a pierced gilt wood frame carved with undulating scrolls of crested acanthus leaves rising from a shell motif to the base, 17 ins x 14 ins (43 cm x 35.5 cms).
A Delightful 17th Century Silk Needlework Portrait Panel Circa 1613, worked in coloured silks and metallic threads with various stitches, depicting the busts of Frederick V Elector Palatine; King of Bohemia and his wife Elizabeth; daughter of James I of England, in oval medallions on an ivory satin ground enhanced with flowers, a moth and snail bordered in later braid. Inscribed paper label on verso. 4 ins x 10¾ ins (10 cm x 27.5 cms). Set in a glazed frame with velvet clad moulding, 7 ins x 13½ ins (18 cm x 34.5 cms).*

Two hand-tinted engravings on glass; 'A View of the House and part of the Garden of his Grace the Duke of Argyll at Whitton' and 'Going Out in the Morning', 7 ins x 11 ins (17.5 cm x 28 cms). An 18th century hand tinted print of 'The Parson returning from Tithing, or Little Piggy squeaking after its Mother' published by R Edwards, 9 ins x 7¼ ins (23 cm x 18.5 cms). Two small prints: portraits of James I and King Edward VI (c.1550) Another reproduction portrait print of Sir Philip Sidney 1544-86, 8 ims x 6 ins (20 cms x 25.5 cms) in a black ripple moulded frame. A 19th Century Decorative Embossed Brass Wall Sconce. The three scrolling candle branches emanating from a cast face-mask mount of a winged Goddess attached to the base of the round dished wall plaque. The centre panel depicting a medallion portrait with date 1482 and initials MDB, The border embossed with undulating foliage in a beaded ropetwist rim, 15 ins (38 cms) in diameter.*
A 17th Century Oval Oil on Canvas: Head & Shoulders Portrait of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), depicted as a young man in his thirties, wearing a white cravat and scarlet jacket with embellished gilt fastenings, 30 ins x 25 ins (76 cm x 64 cms), in a 'Lely' type carved & moulded frame 38 ins x 33 ins (98 cm x 84 cms).*
Circle of Giuseppe Cesari (Caviliere d'Arpino 1568-1640) A portrait of a priest painted c. 1592. The sitter is probably Cinzio Aldobrandini before his appointment as Cardinal in 1593. The subject is shown standing with a letter at a carpet covered dais with a bell, book and writing implements. Cinzio was the eldest nephew of the Aldobrandini pope Clement VIII who took office in 1592. The painting bears Clement's papal tiara and the Aldobrandini arms upper left. The seal on the table may depict the crest of the University of Perugia where Cinzio was a student. Provenance- Estate of Gilbert Rodway QC, 39 1/2'' x 49'' approx.
