18th Century 16th Foot Miniature Portrait of an Lieutenant Isaac Cornock. Circa 1761. This small oval portrait is a head and shoulder study of Lt. Cornock. He wears scarlet coatee, with single bullion epaulette and with black tricorn hat with black cockade. The portrait is mounted into a gilt slip ebonised frame. The reverse with an ink inscription. “Age 22 Isaac Cornock Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 16th Regiment of Foot. Fought at ? as Captain of the 20 and commanded the Scarawalsh troops in 1798. See Sir ? History of the Irish Rebellion 1798”. Colours faded, detail remains. Overall size 5 x 6 inches. Lieutenant Isaac Cornock was born in 1739, this would give a date of the portrait as 1761, the 16th Foot at this time was serving in Ireland and later saw service in the America’s. By 1798 he had left the Regiment and was a Magistrate in the county of Wexford. The Irish Rebellion had broken out and he took command of a local detachment at Scarawalsh, his name appears in a number of publications, regarding the Rebellion. Approx 3 x 3.5 cm.
