A VICTORIAN COROMANDEL AND BRASS INLAID DRESSING BOX said to be formerly the property of Lady Mary Stanhope Countess Beauchamp (1844-1876) of Madresfield Court, the purple velvet and leather lined box fitted twelve silver mounted glass bottles and boxes, each with engraved coat of arms and hallmarked for London 1867 by Williamson & Horton retailed by Halstaff & Hannaford, 228 Regent St, the lock stamped S Mordan & Co, together with a printed portrait of Lady Beauchamp and a copy of the New Testament inscribed to Mary Stanhope and dated February 9 1856, box 32.5cm wide x 25cm deep (some losses and damage)

Vander Gucht after Vanloo, a little soiled and browned, modern half calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, by John Watts for the Author, 1740 § Ruggle (George) Ignoramus, Comoedia, engraved frontispiece, woodcut plate, lightly browned, modern cloth, 1787; and 5 others, drama, 4to & 8vo (10) ⁂ Francis Longe (1689-35) or his eldest son and heir, also Francis (1726-76). The latter was an undergraduate at St Catherine's Hall in Cambridge where he met Richard Gardiner who later wrote the scandalous novellaThe History of Pudica, a Lady of N-rf-lk. With an Account of her Five Lovers... published in 1754. It includes an account of life at Spixworth Park. The house contained an extensive and notable library.

The Life of a Sportsman, first edition, first issue with 4 mounted plates, hand-coloured engraved additional title with vignettes, portrait and 34 plates by Henry Alken, 4 trimmed and mounted as issued, extra-illustrated with two original states of two of the mounted plates (untrimmed and with original captions and imprints dated 1838), one with short marginal tears, plate at p.348 'The Tandem' in second state, 10pp. advertisements at end, some spotting, mostly to tissue guards, bookplate of Joel Spitz featuring portrait of Henry Alken and with his pencil note re the additional plates on front free endpaper, original pictorial blue cloth, gilt, rubbed, recased, new endpapers, preserved in cloth drop-back box (spine faded), [Tooley 65], 8vo, R.Ackermann, 1842. ⁂ "Considered by many to be the premier coloured plate sporting book in the 19th century." Tooley The two additional plates, both dated 1838, prove that the work was planned some time earlier but publication was delayed until 1842. Voyages.- Hondius (Jodocus) Franciscus Draeck nobilissimus Eques Angliæ ano æt sue 43, portrait of Sir Francis Drake, half-length, second state, engraving, on laid paper with indistinct text-based watermark, sheet 395 x 307 mm. (15 1/2 x 12 1/8 in), trimmed just within the platemark, small repaired tear to lower margin, minor surface dirt and light browning, reworked and published by George Vertue, [1538, but later impression from first half of the 18th century]. ⁂ A particularly fine, contemporary portrait of Sir Francis Drake, celebrating his circumnavigation of the World. The portrait is understood to have been engraved by Jodocus Hondius during his residency in London, but with additional shading to the background by George Vertue added to the copper plate in the early 18th century.

A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, 39cm oval painted dial inscribed Wm. Nicholas, Birmingham, the arch painted with a titled portrait of Lord Nelson, rolling moon phase flanked by two ships of the line, spandrels with Britannia and Minerva, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds and calendar dials, twin-winding holes, eight-day movement striking on a bell, the substantial case with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist, flanked by brass-mounted reeded Corinthian columns, canted base, 239cm high, c. 1805 William Nicholas was apprenticed to his father Charles and by the time of the latter's death in 1785, was in partnership with him. He continued in business on his own account until about 1825. There is a clock by Nicholas in a very similar case (but without the commemorate decoration to the dial) in the collections of the National Trust at Little Clarendon, Wiltshire.
