Stains are visible in the marginal areas of the painting especially to the left, behind the rider and in front of his mount. Also noticeable are pigments losses to the green field below the horse. The figures are clean with strong pigments and contrast. The white pigments on the horizon have lightly stained. To Be Sold With No Reserve A portrait of Maharaja Durjan Sal (r. 1825-26),Kotah, Rajasthan circa 1830 and Krishna and the Gopis, Bundi, Rajasthan, circa 1880, ink and opaque pigments on paper, the first depicted standing and holding a sarpech; the second with two lines of black devanagari script to top, 15 x 7.8cm. and 25 x 18.4cm.(2) Footnotes: Maharaja Durjan Sal (r. 1825-26) was the 9th Maharaja of Bharatpur, having opposedthe rightful heir his cousin's accession and imprisoned him. British forces eventually laid siege to Bharatpur for three weeks and on 18 January 1826, the fort was stormed by troops under Lord Combermere and dismantled, the Maharaja was then imprisoned at Allahabad.

A seated portrait of a young prince, Rajasthan, North India, late 19th/early 20th century, facing left, wearing white tunic and deep yellow trousers, seated in a European chair, holding a tulwar and a kerchief, 19.5 x 14.5cm.Condition Report: The edges are sharp, the corners are clipped and the reverse plain. As can be seen in the catalogue illustration a small area of tarnishing shows in the upper part of this lot, affecting the purple rules and extending above on approximately 4.5cm. The pigments and gold are strong. This painting is in good condition overall.
