A good vintage signed 8 x 11 photograph by both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip individually, the official image depicting the Royal couple standing in full-length poses together, wearing ceremonial dress, at Buckingham Palace. Photograph by Anthony Buckley (uncredited). Signed (‘Elizabeth R’) by the Queen and signed (‘Philip’) by the Duke of Edinburgh, both in fountain pen inks to the lower photographer’s mount and dated 1962 in the Queen’s hand. Framed and glazed in the original brown leather presentation frame by Jarrolds of Knightsbridge and with a thin gilt stamped decorative border. With a thin strip of light water staining to the lower edge of the photographer's mount, only very slightly affecting the signatures and date. GThe present photograph was taken by portrait photographer Anthony Buckley (1912-1993) in October 1960 prior to a Royal tour of Pakistan and India.

PART ARVO: (1935- ) Estonian Composer. Part´s music is largely inspired by Gregorian chant. He invented a compositional technique called ''Tintinnabuli''. Part has been the most performed living composer of the last decade. Rare signed 7 x 5 photograph, the attractive image showing Part in a close-up portrait pose, holding and watching a small bell in his hands. Signed in bold blue ink to a largely clear area of the image, also adding a short autograph musical quote, which he entitles "Fratres" above his signature to the upper part of the photograph. EXFratres ("Brothers" in Latin), 1977, is a musical work by Part exemplifying his titinnabuly style of composition. The composition has been described as a "mesmerizing set of variations on a six-bar theme combining frantic activity and sublime stillness that encapsulates Part's observation that 'the instant and eternity are struggling within us'"

REYNOLDS JOSHUA: (1723-1792) English portrait painter, a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. A good A.L.S., Joshua Reynolds, one page, 4to, London, 18th October 1783, to John Wauchope. Reynolds states that he has been desired by Sir William Forbes to 'send to you a note of what the late Lord Errol (sic) was indebted to me for pictures painted for him' At the foot of the letter Reynolds provides his account, totalling £163-5-0 and comprising a 'whole length' study of Lord Erroll (£105-0-0), a painting of Lady Erroll and a copy of the same (£26-5-0 each), an alteration to the drapery of a painting (£5-5-0) and a packing case (ten shillings). With integral address leaf bearing a good red wax seal (small area of paper loss where originally opened). With a contemporary docket recording Wauchope's response to Reynolds, 'answ[ere]d that I could not promise but would be disappointed if the debt was not paid before the end of the year'. Some light age wear and a few small, neat tears, one only slightly affecting a few letters of the signature. About VGJohn Wauchope (1750-1828) Scottish solicitor, Writer to the Signet. James Hay (1726-1778) 15th Earl of Erroll. Scottish nobleman who served as Rector of the University of Glasgow 1761-63.Reynolds painted a full-length portrait of the Earl of Erroll in coronation robes and holding the baton of Lord High Constable of Scotland from the time Erroll officiated at the coronation of King George III in 1761. Reynolds's ledger records that Erroll sat for his portrait in March and April 1762 and that the fee was 100 guineas. As the present letter demonstrates, this bill was still outstanding at the time of the Earl's death in 1778 and was not settled until 1783.

Ambrose McEvoy ARA, British 1878-1927 - Street scene; pen and ink, wash and charcoal on paper, with studio stamp lower right, 25.3 x 22.7 cm Provenance: the Collection of Bernard Sheridan (1927-2007) and thence by descent Note: Ambrose McEvoy was an important and successful British portrait artist, who was inspired and encouraged by his friend and supporter James McNiell Whistler. He studied at the Slade where he was part of the celebrated circle of artists that included Gwen and Augustus John, and later worked in Dieppe with Walter Sickert.

Henryk Gotlib, Polish 1890-1966 - Couple Embracing in a Mountainous Landscape, c.1924-25; watercolour and pencil on paper, 15.5 x 12.4 cm (ARR) Provenance: Boundary Gallery, London, ref. 'Gotlib 26 Boundary 53 (1988)' (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); the Collection of Paul Clarke and thence by descent Note:Gotlib studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, followed by the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by the artist Angelo Jank. He was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlibs best works are strikingly evident in these pieces, which therefore serve as excellent examples of his style and approach. Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others.

He exhibited with the New Arts Centre and at Newlyn Art Gallery, and had a solo show in 1950 at the City Art Gallery museum in Plymouth.  Works by the artist are in public collections, including the Tate and the Imperial War Museum.

Setting mythological and fantastical imagery within imagined landscapes, PIC's work transports the viewing through time and the imagination, demonstrating the same visionary zeal as figures such as Marc Chagall, Cecil Collins and Leonora Carrington. His work was exhibited in some of the most important British galleries of the 20th century, including the Wertheim Gallery during the 1930s, Gimpel Fils during the 1940s and 50s and Jack Bilbo's celebrated The Modern Art Gallery in the 1940s.

Salisbury was one of the leading society portrait painters of his day. The son of a plumber and glazier, he was drawn to art at an early age and throughout his career painted many important figures in the cultural and political sphere, including Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill. His portraits of Dame Maud McCarthy and Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII) are currently on display as part of the inaugural display at the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery in London. Salisbury also painted large-scale ceremonial, historical and religious scenes, many of which are now in public collections. Salisbury painted in a classical but lively style, bringing his sitters to life while remaining vehemently opposed to modern methods. The works for sale with Roseberys include portraits of glamourous society figures, politicians, eminent businesspeople, and members of the aristocracy. Interesting examples include portraits of Will Keith Kellogg, founder of the eponymous cereal company, Her Highness the Ameera of Bhahwalpur and Mrs Dunlap Hopkins, President of the Women’s School of Design in New York. There is also a highly moving study of a Nurse in Wartime uniform. Alongside these portraits, there is also a collection of large-scale studies for religious scenes. These works have remained unseen for several decades and were recently donated to The Walpole Society by Philip Mould & Company on behalf of a private collector.

H. Gerrard Note: this lot is accompanied by a copy of 'A. H. Gerrard: His Life and Work' by K. L. Gerrard, 2019. Gerrard was a highly influential artist and teacher, mainly at the Slade where he became Head of Sculpture from 1948-68, and his pupils included Karin Jonzen, Eduardo Paolozzi and F. E. McWilliam who would later write on his work. Gerrard had an exhibition at Colnaghi's alongside his wife Katharine Leigh-Pemberton in 1931 as well as a retrospective at the South London Gallery in 1978. His works are found in public spaces including 'Development of Man' at Bridge Street, Hemel Hempstead, 'The North Wind' at St. James's Park Underground (alongside works by Eric Gill, Henry Moore and Jacob Epstein) and at St. Anselm's Church in Kennington. Works are also in public collections including the Imperial War Museum and Leeds Art Gallery.

Dame Ethel Walker DBE ARA, British 1861-1951 - Portrait of a woman in pearls; oil on canvas, 61 x 51.6 cm Provenance: the Collection of Bernard Sheridan (1927-2007) and thence by descent Note: this is classic example of Walker's style, with its subtle gradations of chalky paint and quiet, almost breathless atmosphere. The intimate handling of the scene and the gentle contrast between fluid paint and bare contract are reminiscent of French artists such as Edouard Vuillard. Other works on this theme are in public collections including the Government Art Collection, Manchester Art Gallery and The Courtauld, London. The artist exhibited widely in the UK during her lifetime and was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate in 1951, alongside her contemporaries Gwen John and Frances Hodgkins and organised by John Rothenstein. More recently, her work was central to Tate Britain's 'Queer British Art 1861-1967' in 2017. She is currently the subject of a Spotlight exhibition at Tate Britain.

His first retrospective was at the  Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam in 1973. This late work demonstrates his distinctive hyperreal approach to portraiture, creating an uncanny sense of the sitter. Labisse was heavily influenced by the work of his fellow Belgian and mentor, James Ensor, who he met in the 1920s.

Bernard Meninsky, Ukrainian/British 1891-1950 - Portrait of Celia Boywell; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Meninsky', 50.7 x 40.5 cm Provenance: the Collection of Paul Clarke and thence by descent Note: the work is inscribed on the reverse 'CAS 35'. A large number of works were donated by the artist's widow, Nora Meninsky, through the Contemporary Art Society to British museums, including Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Victoria Art Gallery and the British Museum. Bernard Meninsky moved to Britain as a child from Ukraine, living in Liverpool where he first studied art. Meninsky was eventually awarded a scholarship to study at the Slade between 1912-13, following his fellow-Jewish émigré artists Mark Gertler and David Bomberg. His war-time mural ‘The Arrival, 1918’ is now in the Imperial War Museum collection and during the 1920s, he exhibited at the Groupil Gallery and was a celebrated tutor at Westminster School of Art, also becoming associated with the Bloomsbury group during this period. He exhibited his work in the 1914 London Group exhibition at the Goupil Gallery and at the New English Art Club.
