Lieutenant Colonel Louis Harris Wrangham, M.C., R.M. (1897-1941). Collection of more than 1,000 photographs in five albums capturing military and leisure activities, including numerous photographs depicting Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) during his tour of the Indian Subcontinent and Japan in 1921-22. The photographs capture various cultures & customs, scenery & landmarks (including, for instance, the Egyptian pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza), sports & leisure (including swimming, tennis, hunting, horse racing, and polo); vehicles (including aircraft, warships, cars), and moments of civilian & family life. Approximately 35 photographs depict the Prince of Wales engaging in various activities or meeting notable figures such as Prince Regent Hirohito. Some photographs were taken on board HMS Renown, including images of the Prince's farewell speech to the ship's company. The photographs are in various sizes, well-preserved, mounted on the original card album pages; the albums are oblong quarto size, bound in half crushed morocco, the boards and spines worn. Together with a handwritten letter from 'Officer Commanding 11th R.M. Battalion' to 'Adjutant General, Royal Marines', 29 March 1923, explaining at length that a pencil inscription by Wrangham (on an attached document) can't be accepted as a 'mere joke', and that he would therefore like him to be removed from his command (the inscription in question, which is on a typed military order, is 'Balls'). Also a copy of The Globe & Laurel, 1941, which features Wrangham's obituary on p.368, and a signed photographic profile portrait of HRH Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942), inscribed on the lower margin, 'with best wishes for Xmas 1941'

Jerom Petion de Villeneuve Maire de Paris'. Part. dam., paint losses, unrestored condition. Frame. Jérôme Pétion de Villeneuve was born in Chartres on January 3, 1756. He died 1794 near Bordeaux. Villeneuve was one of the well-known leaders of the French Revolution. 'Pétion de Villeneuve first worked as a lawyer in Chartres and, when the Estates-General were called, came to Versailles as a deputy of the Third Estate, where he soon made himself known for his opposition to Mirabeau and for ruthless attacks on the Queen. In December 1790 he was elected President of the National Assembly and in June 1791 he was appointed President of the Paris Criminal Tribunal. In this capacity he was charged, together with Latour-Maubourg and Antoine Barnave, with the repatriation of the royal family who had been taken in flight. On 16 November 1791, Pétion de Villeneuve became mayor of Paris, his opponent being Lafayette, who was supported by the court. Known as a partisan of the radicals, he left the way open for them: with the Tuileries storm on 10 August 1792, the revolution finally overthrew the monarchy in France. In the National Convention, of which he became the first president, Pétion de Villeneuve stood by the Gironde and voted in the trial of King Louis XVI for the appeal to the people and the death of the king without delay. On 1 December 1792, de Villeneuve was replaced in his post as mayor of Paris by Nicolas Chambon. After Dumouriez's treachery was exposed, Robespierre used this as a weapon against Pétion de Villeneuve and attacked him fiercely. He was then publicly ostracised on 31 May and summarily imprisoned on 2 June. Pétion de Villeneuve managed to escape to the south of the country, where he stayed until June 1794, but he was tracked down there. He fled again with a companion to the region of Bordeaux, where he was soon found as a corpse, half eaten by wolves.' Als Parteigänger der Radikalen bekannt, ließ er diesen den Weg frei: mit dem Tuileriensturm am 10. August 1792 stürzte die Revolution endgültig die Monarchie in Frankreich. Im Nationalkonvent, dessen erster Präsident er wurde, hielt sich Pétion de Villeneuve zur Gironde und stimmte im Prozess gegen König Ludwig XVI. für den Aufruf an das Volk und den Tod des Königs ohne Aufschub. Am 1. Dezember 1792 wurde de Villeneuve in seinem Amt als Pariser Bürgermeister von Nicolas Chambon abgelöst. Nachdem der Verrat Dumouriez' aufgedeckt worden war, nutzte Robespierre dies als Waffe gegen Pétion de Villeneuve und griff diesen heftig an. Am 31. Mai wurde er daraufhin öffentlich geächtet und am 2. Juni kurzerhand gefangen genommen. Es gelang Pétion de Villeneuve zwar noch, in den Süden des Landes zu entkommen, wo er sich bis zum Juni 1794 aufhielt, doch spürte man ihn dort auf. Er floh erneut mit einem Begleiter in die Gegend von Bordeaux, wo man ihn bald darauf als Leiche, von Wölfen halb abgefressen, auffand.'
