It was bought by our vendor`s deceased husband in 1998 from London dealers The Fine Art Society Plc after hearing of its existence from Elwell expert Wendy Loncaster at a talk given by her. Our Vendor`s husband`s great grandfather Col. J B Stacey Clitherow had been painted by Elwell, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy`s Summer Exhibition in 1931. It was after viewing this exhibition that George V commissioned Elwell to paint his portrait (His Majesty King George V - which now hangs in the Palace of Holyrood House, Edinburgh) and similarities between the two portraits can be seen. It is for this reason - the connection between the two portraits, that Col. Stacy Clitherow`s great grandson bought the oil George V lying in state at Westminster Hall.***

Nazi Propaganda German Political Profiles Berlin 1938 – one of the most remarkable Nazi propaganda publications in English. This is a series of pen portraits of leading Nazis including Hess Goebbels Ribbentrop Seyss-Inquart and Himmler. They portray these mass murderers as pretty decent ordinary guys – with the Himmler pen portrait being particularly illustrative. It cites an event when an SS guard had been waiting for him when he was late. Himmler realising that the men had been waiting for him asked whether they had eaten. When he was told they hadn’t he immediately invited them to eat with him: ‘...that one little incident chosen from the many...is typical of Heinrich Himmler. He has a brotherly consideration for the welfare of the men under him which is one of the reasons why his administration is so efficient. Yet he is not sparing of his own comfort of his personal interests. He is modest and never permits himself to be the central object of any public demonstration; he wishes to be known only by his work...’ [which by the time this book came out included the mass extermination of Jews Gypsies disabled etc etc]
