A 19th Century scent bottle by Giacomo Franchini and produced by Pietro Bigaglia, of compressed ovoid form and decorated to one side with four and a half portrait canes with a further portrait cane to the opposing side over a swirled multicoloured ground with internal silver foil aventurine, mounted with a hinged gilt metal cap and short finger loop chain, length 6cm, S/D.
British School (16th/17th century). 'Portrait of Dean Alexander Nowell (c1507-1602)', by an unknown hand, oil on canvas, re-stretched and re-lined, 84.5cm x 71cm. (Dean of St Paul's for 42 years. He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he became a Fellow in 1536. Shown with a fishing rod behind him and with fish hooks in his hand (he was a keen fisherman) and on a table, he was known as a piscator hominum, and according to Thomas Fuller’s History of the Worthies of Britain, he accidently invented bottled beer. Other copies of this image are held in Brasenose College, University of Oxford, and St Paul's Cathedral, an engraving after it was published in 1796). Provenance: Sold by the Nowell family. This portrait has been in the possession of the Nowell family since 1811 when it was given as a gift to Alexander Nowell by Robert Sherson for helping Sherson's son when he was in trouble. 19th Century British School, After Sir Thomas Lawrence, Portrait of William Linley, oil on canvas, framed. Measurements 53.5 x 43.5 cm, frame 70 x 60 cm Based on an original painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence which was bequeathed by Linley to the Dulwich Picture Gallery, dated 1785/9. The painting depicts William Linley on the verge of manhood, as indicated by his long locks and uniform of St. Pauls School. William was known for his sweet voice and rosy cheeks, inspiring Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797 to compose the sonnet 'While my young cheek retains its youthful hues' after hearing Linley sing. William was the youngest of 12 children, all of whom were musical, the most successful being his brother Thomas Linley the younger. Following his return to the UK in 1795 after spending some years in India as a civil servant for the East India Company he worked with his brother-in-law at Drury Lane Theatre. William wrote comic operas including 'The Honey Moon' and 'Pavilion', and his most successful 'The Dramatic Songs of Shakespeare'.
Circle of Konstantin Kapidgli, Portrait Miniature on Copper of Sultan Selim III (R. 1789-1809) oval shaped oil on copper, framed. Measurements 12.5 x 10 cm, frame 20 x 18 cm Konstantin Kapidgli was a Greek-Ottoman artist comissioned by Sultan Selim III to draw portrait engravings of Ottoman Sultans, however following Selim III's deposition in 1807 the commission was cancelled, to be later resumed by John Young in 1815 during the reign of Mahmud II. Selim III was the 28th Sultan of the Ottoman empire, known as a patron of the arts and pro-reform. He was deposed in a military coup by the Janissaries and put to death in 1808
