English School, c.1830 A PORTRAIT OF THOMAS SLINGSBY, HALF LENGTH SEATED, IN A BLUE COAT AND HOLDING A BOOK; A PORTRAIT OF HIS WIFE EMMA, HALF LENGTH SEATED, IN A BROWN DRESS WITH A SUITE OF PEARL AND SAPPHIRE JEWELLERY A pair, oil on canvas 93 x 77cm, in contemporary gilt composition frames
A late 19th/early 20th century miniature portrait brooch, the central portrait depicting the head and shoulders of a classical gentleman with a scroll design border. Length of brooch-6cms, Width-5.2cms. Weight-45.35 grams. Condition: The brooch is in generally good condition. There are slight scratches to the frame, minor wear and tear, there is dirt and discolouration to some of the scrolls, specifically to the back join details. The pin and catch is secure. The portrait is in generally good condition.
Maugham (William Somerset) The Bishop`s Apron fourth edition with postcard signed & inscribed by the author and with mounted portrait loosely inserted contemporary cloth 8vo Chapman & Hall 1906. *** The inscription reads “`I merely wanted to ask Ponsonby for more potatoes.` W.S. Maugham. July 20. 1908.” a line from The Bishop`s Apron.(2)
Maugham (William Somerset) The Constant Wife first English edition from the American sheets [one of 750 copies] frontispiece portrait of Ethel Barrymore original black cloth with yellow printed labels excellent condition printed dust-jacket small chip from head of spine small closed tear to one corner otherwise very good [Stott A35b] Heinemann 1927; and the first Doubleday edition of the same 8vo (2) *** The first Heinemann edition was issued in September from Doran`s sheets in a print run of 750 copies only (compared to Doran`s US run of 2000). The play was first performed at the Ohio Theatre in November 1926 with Ethel Barrymore in the lead; the actress apologised to the author after the first night for suffering stage fright but she vowed it would nevertheless run for two years which it did...(2)

Haddon (Arthur Trevor) Portrait of W.Somerset Maug oil on canvas half-length portrait of the author set against coastal background signed by the artist 600 x 480 mm. framed with metal plaque giving subject & artist`s name n.d. [?c.1935]. *** An excellent comparatively benign of the author. Trevor Haddon (1864-1941) did several well-known portraits but is better known himself for his paintings of life in Spain and Italy which provided many illustrations for travel books of the Edwardian period.

Maugham (William Somerset) and Jesse Lasky. Photog full length black & white portrait of the author and film producer standing side-by-side 259 x 204 mm. [c.1920]; and 2 other photographs one a staged group shot featuring Somerset Maugham and Gerald Haxton probably from the same period the other a later head & shoulders portrait of Somerset Maugham with a note on the reverse about a collaboration between the author and David Selznick plus a duplicated cut-out illustration of a scene from Lasky`s production of The Explorer (3) *** The film producer Jesse Lasky tried to utilise Somerset Maugham along with other well-known authors of the time as screenwriters thinking their writing skills could be adapted the medium of film sadly not a great success. Maugham & Haxton arrived in Hollywood towards the end of 1920 but Maugham did not find the set-up or the remuneration satisfactory. He continued on a few occasions to write for the screen but never felt he mastered the technique although his own works have been filmed more than any other author writing in English. Eventually Maugham declared he would not right for the pictures again though a disastrous attempt was made for David O.Selznick Productions in 1944 The Hour Before the Dawn cementing the author`s opinion that it was not the medium for him. Photographs of Gerald Haxton are uncommon.(4)
