A CONTINENTAL ENAMEL SNUFF BOX of rectangular form with concave sides, the “bleu de roi” ground painted with flowers within “bianco sopra bianco” cartouche, the cover with a gilt metal mount painted with a portrait of a noble man, opening to a silk cushion inscribed “MJ Feb 26th 1820”, 2½”. THOMAS TOMPION AND EDWARD BANGER: A FINE QUEEN ANNE GOLD QUARTER REPEATING POCKET WATCH by Thomas Tompion and Edward Banger, no. 231, the back plate inscribed “T. Tompion and E. Banger 231 London”, the dial signed in the centre “Tompion & Banger, London” in two baroque cartouches, the pierced case engraved with birds amidst floral scrolls and with a circular panel engraved with a landscape, the outer pair case with pierced and repoussé decoration incorporating four profile portrait medallions beneath panels chased with an owl, a hound, a fox and a peasant, the centre with an oval panel engraved with a coronet and the interior inscribed “WI” 231, 55mm dia. Provenance: Private Collection, Dorset. This previously unrecorded watch is a magnificent example of the technical virtuosity and the highly finished case-work characteristic of other watches produced during the relatively short-lived partnership of Thomas Tompion and Edward Banger. For a comparable timepiece by Thomas Tompion and Edward Banger see “Thomas Tompion at the Dial and Three Crowns” by Jeremy Evans, published by the Antiquarian Horological Society 2006, fig. 82. This particular watch, which is in the collection of The British Museum, was made in 1703, no. 3560.
ENSIGN ARTHUR OAKES 13TH (SOMERSET) LIGHT INFANTRY: The First Afghan War, 1839-42. Medals for: “Cabul 1842” and “Jellalabad 1842” named to Ensign Arthur Oakes, 13th (Somerset) Light Infantry, each retaining the original leather case inscribed “De la Cour Jeweller, Chatham”, together with a portrait miniature thought to depict Ensign Oakes. This identification is supported by the epaulette on the subject`s shoulder which shows a bugle horn, the cap badge of the Light Infantry. See illustration Provenance: The recipient and thence by descent through the Hornsby-Wright family. The 1847 Army List shows the services of Lieutenant (as he had then become) Arthur Oakes as follows:- “1841-1842. Took part in every action from the Cabul Pass to Cabul. Lieutenant Oakes was wounded at the storming of the Khoord Cabul Pass and also in the sortie on 1st April 1842 at Jellalabad”, The Defence of Jellalabad, the 13th Light Infantry being the only British unit present, was the one good thing to come out of the failure of the First Afghan War. Another portrait miniature thought to depict Ensign Oakes is included as lot 282, and lot 281 includes a portrait, said to be of his wife.
Nineteenth Century School : A portrait of a young girl in a tartan dress, oil on canvas, 74 cm x 61 cm, framed. The painting is very dirty and requires much cleaning. There are two small tears to the canvass, approx the size of a thumb-nail. The base of the painting reads ` R H Stannard`. The frame has minor loss of gilding but generally is in good condition.

Sold on the Instructions of the Governing Body of Rugby School Shakespeare (William). Mr. William Shakespear’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. Published according to the Original Copies. Unto which is added, Seven Plays, Never before Printed in Folio ... The Fourth Edition; Fourth Folio, lacks portrait, two later manuscript notes on the title, and the oval stamp of the Arnold Library Rugby, the first gathering possibly inserted, with the fore-margin of the title slightly shorter, TT3 and TT4 also inserted and with shorter margins, small holes or rustholes in B4 and ZZ1, paper flaws in B6 and F3, all slightly affecting the text, 19th century tree calf, extremities of spine worn, upper joint cracing, bookplate of Rugby School, and stamped W*I*W inside the front cover, [Wing S2915; Pforzheimer 911], folio, (360 x 225mm), for H. Herringman, and are to be sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, 1685 The Fourth Folio Edition includes Pericles and the six spurious plays, and was printed on larger sheets than the earlier folios. This copy has the variant setting of the title page omitting Chiswell’s name. Provenance: Presented by Mathew Holbecke Bloxam, DR, to Rugby School Library in 1884 and inscribed thus on the front endpaper. Also with Bloxam’s notes saying that the book came from Lawford Hall, the property of Theodosius Boughton, Bart., in the eighteenth century.

Recollections of an Excursion to the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, First Edition, with an autograph letter signed by William Beckford tipped in after the title, engraved frontispiece portrait, offset, signature scraped from head of title, manuscript notes on the pastedown concerning the letter, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, bookplate, joints splitting, 1835 The autograph letter is signed ‘WTB’ and addressed Park St,. Monday 5th April, 1841, to Mr. Edm. English Junr., Milsom Street, Bath. It refers to ‘this most tiresome Benjamin business’, possibly Sir Benjamin Hale, afterwards Lord Stanover. As the note says ‘Mr. English was an upholsterer at Bath, who managed much business for Mr. Beckford, and furnished his house there, and the tower on Lansdown’.
