Edward Collier (Breda circa 1640-1708 London)A trompe l'oeil still life of a framed letter rack with a copy of Antony Thysius's Sondaghsche uren, a letter, a Delft Almanac, two combs, a quill, a portrait miniature and other objects signed with initials 'E.C.' (on the letter, centre)oil on panel46.2 x 64.3cm (18 3/16 x 25 5/16in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection, EuropeWe are grateful to Dr. Fred Meijer for dating the present outstanding and well-preserved example of Collier's work to his mature period when he was working in Leiden between 1702 and 1706. It can be compared closely to two other depictions by the artist of framed letter racks from the same period, both with portraits of Erasmus and both of which are dated 1703 (respectively with Peter Tillou in 1987; and with Richard Green in 2003 - see RKD image nos. 121442 and 107542). In the present painting, among the usual arrangement of journals, engravings, letters, combs, sealing wax sticks and other ephemera (signifying an updating of the older 'memento mori' still life model) is included a copy of Antonius Thysius's Sondaghsche uren, ofte Poëtische bedenckingen over eenighe historien uyt de H. Schriftuyr genomen. Gedrukt boek (which was published in Leiden in 1646 and translates as 'Sunday hours, or Poetic reflections on some histories taken from the Holy Scripture's printed book').Although the date of Collier's death had been variously given as early as before 1702 and as late as 1710, this confusion appears to have arisen from the records of burials of men with a similar name in Leiden (an Evert Colier and an Evert Pietersz. Coleyn respectively). We now know, however, that the artist returned to London since his last known painting is signed 'London 1707' and his burial is recorded on 8 September, 1708 at Saint James's, Piccadilly. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Krempel, Nicolaes Maes, Petersberg, 1999, p.302, cat. no. A100a, ill., pl. 149Prof. Dr. Ekkart believes that the present portrait originally had a pendant, which was signed and dated 1669, and offered at Christie's, London, 27 June 1975, lot 33. At the time of this sale, the Portrait of a Woman was offered with an incorrect pendant portrait. Although each of the same dimensions, these two works clearly do not belong together: for example, the woman is noticeably larger than the man; the table beside her is much higher than in the male portrait; and the man is depicted before a view of the landscape or sea which is missing in the female portrait.Ekkart suggests that the present work is a more suitable pendant to the Portrait of a Woman, given the stylistic and compositional connections between each work, particularly the rendering of the drapes and placement of the sitters (see: P.Huys Janssen and W. Sumowski, The Hoogsteder Exhibition of Rembrandt's Academy, exh. cat., The Hague, 1992, pp.240-2).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Later, in her catalogue entry for the work, Bassani notes a similarity, both in handling and physiognomy, with the Portrait of a young man, previously with Sestieri in Rome (see P. Pacht Bassani, Claude Vignon 1593-1670, Paris, 1992, p. 175, cat. no. 20). It has been suggested that this latter portrait may depict François Langlois, called Ciatres as the sitter resembles that in the recognised portrait of him now on loan to the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ink and pigments on silk. Depicts in the center the solemn image of an emperor seated cross-legged in lotus position on a rectangular seat adorned with colorful blooming lotuses and scrolls of curled leaves. The man shows a solemn and serene expression, gazing straight ahead, connecting with the viewer. The head is adorned by a traditional bicolor hat, combining red and white tones; and the body is adorned by a chanfgu of cobalt blue on the outside and celadon green on the inside, which is closed by a succession of golden buttons on the torso. Both faces show delicate embroidered details, barely perceptible, such as archaic geometric elements or a large coiled dragon arranged in the center of the chest, next to a sea of ruyi clouds, undisputed symbol of the Chinese imperial family.  In her hands she holds a delicate mala, made of small reddish beads interspersed with larger jade beads, from which hang strings of ruyi ornaments. The colorful portrait contrasts with the neutral ochre color of the wall and the floral elements of the carpet and seat. Arranged on a plain, rectangular wooden seat with a decorative frieze in front. Size: 94.5 x 98 cm; Size with frame: 108.5 x 112.5 cmProvenance:- French private collection.

A FRENCH WHITE MARBLE PORTRAIT BUST OF FLORA BY ALBERT-ERNEST CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1824-1887)possibly Sophie-Alexandrine Croizette or Marguerite Bellanger, signed 'Carrier-Belleuse', on a turned socle66cm highCatalogue NoteAlbert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse was one of the most talented and prolific French artists of the 19th century He reacted against the static poses of the neo-classical art and drew inspiration from the opulence and excess of Rococo portraiture from the 18th century. This bust resembles both Sophie Croizette and Marguerite Bellanger. Sophie Croizette (1847-1901) was a Russian born actress and considered the main rival to Sarah Bernhardt. Marguerite Bellanger (1838-1886) was also an actress and one of the leading figures of the demi-monde of the Second Empire. She was Napoleon III's mistress between 1863 and 1865. She inspired Carrier-Belleuse to create a number of fantasy busts including the Four Seasons. For an identical bust descrbed as 'Sophie Croizette' see Sotheby's, Ninetheenth Century European Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, 22nd November 1988, lot 46.
