A Chinese export porcelain 'Arms Of Liberty' punch bowl, painted in polychrome colours with two sets of portraits of John Wilkes and Lord Mansfield in family crest style, interspaced with flowering peony sprays, internally decorated with scattered blooms to the well within an iron red and black cell border, chocolate brown rim lining, c1770, 25.5cm diameter *This punch bowl's pseudo-armorial was satirically drawn to poke fun at English political figures of the late 1760s for their opposition to John Wilkes (1727-97). A proponent of civil liberties and American independence, Wilkes was elected several times to the House of Commons, but repeatedly expelled for attacking King George III and his loyalists. The portrait of John Wilkes is topped with a crest with lion passant and over the motto, "ALWAYS READY IN A GOOD CAUSE"; it is flanked by two figures - his friend and legal advisor Serjeant John Glynn (1722-1779) in flowing robes on the left and his patron Lord Temple (1739-1802) in coat and breeches on the right. The second portrait is of Lord Mansfield (1705-1793), Chief Justice from 1756-1788, this is over the motto "JUSTICE SANS PITIE" (Justice without mercy); and is supported by Lord Bute (1713-1792) in coat and breeches and the Devil. Mansfield was the judge who produced the judgment against Wilkes for the libelous attacks on King George III. The crest over Mansfield's portrait, a snake flanked by thistles, is a thinly veiled reference to Lord Bute's Scottish connections and his possible Jacobite leanings. The decoration on this bowl was copied in China from a printed broadsheet issued in London in June of 1768. The impending conflict between Britain and America, and Wilkes's renewed electoral struggles in 1772, heightened the popularity of these bowls on both sides of the Atlantic. They were prized by those who hailed Wilkes as a champion of liberty. A similarly decorated bowl, c.f. Sotheby's New York, 20th January 2012, Lot 227 and previously Sotheby's New York, Important Americana: Robert E.Crawford, October 13, 2001, lot 60.
