Duncan Grant 1885-1978 portrait of Amaryllis Garnett initialed and dated 58 oil on canvas laid on board unframed 50x42cm.; 19.75x16.5in. (2) Amaryllis was the granddaughter of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. The present work was painted at Charleston c.1958. To be sold together with Portrait of a Girl Reading oil on board by the same hand unframed.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR EPHEMERA relating to the Trent Affair - a carte de visite style photographic portrait of Captain Wilkes, a similar contemporary cartoon of the affair and a card signed in ink by Wilkes and dated 1861 (the date of the crisis) NB on 8th November 1861 USA Captain Wilkes of the San Jacinto seized Confederate envoys Mason & Slidell from the British packet Trent. Although honoured in the USA the British Government were not happy and a seven day ultimatum was issued by Foreign Secretary Lord Russell, British troops were sent to Canada to prepare for possible war with the US. Unwilling to fight a war on two fronts and bowing to International pressure, Abraham Lincoln surrendered Mason & Lidell on 26th December 1861.

DAVID MACH (B.1956) IT TAKES TWO Silver and steel construction 2/12 12.5cm x 19cm x 16cm (5in x 7.5in x 6.3in) The present work is based on one of David Mach's most celebrated outdoor sculptures similarly entitled iIt Takes Two.i It is the second in an edition of twelve castes by Pangolin Editions Art Foundry. The original iIt Takes Twoi has been exhibited internationally in London Warsaw and Sydney and has recently been sold to a private European collector who will exhibited it outside FIAC 06 in Paris this October.
