A late Victorian silver `Charley`s Aunt` vesta case, the front decorated in relief with a portrait, the reverse inscribed `From Charley`s Aunt, Dec 21st 1895`, Sheffield 1895 by Walker & Hall, length approx 4.5cm. Note: this silver souvenir vesta was distributed to the audience of the London Globe Theatre on 21st December 1895 to commemorate the play`s third anniversary performance of Brandon Thomas`s highly successful farce `Charley`s Aunt`. The portrait is based on a photograph of W.S Penley, the actor who created the role.
A Staffordshire porcelain rectangular plaque, mid-19th Century, painted with a girl and dog, the reverse titled `Me and My Dog`, approx 9.2cm x 6.5cm, together with a French porcelain oval plaque, late 19th Century, painted with a bust portrait of a young lady, length approx 8.5cm (repair to rim).
A George III mahogany hall chair attributed to Gillows, Lancaster circa 1790, the shield back bears the arms of William Brooks of Whalley (1763-1846) over a dished boarded seat on square tapering front legs united by a plain H stretcher, 50 cm wide, 92.5cm high, 45.5cm deep NOTE: William Brooks was a cotton merchant and a banker and founder, in 1792, of the Banking House known as Cunliffe, Brooks and Co. which ultimately merged with Lloyds in 1900. His portrait hangs in Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery. A set of fourteen hall chairs including two armchairs of identical design were supplied to Stephen Tempest for Broughton Hall, Yorkshire painted with the Tempest crest in 1789 and remain in the collection of that house, the initial design of 1788 for the Broughton chairs, showing them with fluted legs and without the stretcher, is illustrated in Lindsay Boynton (ed)., Gillow Furniture designs 1760-1800 (Royston, 1995), fig.254 and p.175. one of the armchairs is illustrated and the set described in Susan E. Stewart, Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730-1840, vol. I (Suffolk, 2008), pp.200/1. One of the set was also included in the 1991/2 Travelling Exhibition Gillow Chairs and Fashion, North West Museum Service, Blackburn, 1991 (Stephen V. Of military interest. An Italian order of the crown of Italy white enamelled medal of rounded cross form, centred with an enamelled Savoy eagle, jewelled coronet to verso with filigree mounts, together with one other order of the crown of Italy cross, and one other Italian 1915-1918 medal, various badges and a late 19th Century half length miniature portrait on ivory, of a formally dressed elderly gentleman within ebonised gilt metal mounted frame.
