ENGLISH SCHOOL (18TH/19TH CENTURY), OIL ON PANEL, Half-length Portrait of a Seated Gent, believed to be Dr Edward Rigby of Norwich (1747-1821). As a young man, the artist John Crome began working as an errand boy to the eminent City Doctor; Rigby became Mayor of Norwich in 1805 and lived at 32 Giles Street. Dr Rigby was the first person to recognise the ability of John Crome and became a great influence on his life, introducing him to some significant people of the day, 15” x 11”
After Hans Holbein, Portrait of Elizabeth Seymour, formerly identified as Queen Catherine Howard, Half length, oil on canvas, arched top, 77cm x 62cm. Scholars in the Victorian era incorrectly identified the original Holbein portrait as depicting Queen Catherine Howard. However, historian Antonia Fraser has recently proved that this image is far more likely to portray Elizabeth Seymour-Cromwell. The sitter wears a widow`s outfit, which Catherine Howard never had reason to wear - but Elizabeth did, since her first husband, Sir Anthony, died in 1534. Furthermore, the woman shown in the above portrait shows a clear family resemblance to her sister Jane Seymour (Henry VIII`s third wife), particularly in the chin and mouth.
