(Hrsg.). Paul Kother. 1878 - 1963. Melancholischer Expressionismus. Verden 2018. Paul Kother war seit 1894 an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig. Zwei Jahre später besuchte er die Akademie der bildenden Künste in Dresden und war Schüler von Carl Bantzer. Zusammen mit dem Brücke-Künstler Otto Mueller teile er sich eine Atelierwohnung in München (1898-99). Eine enge Freundschaft verband die beiden Männer, denn Kother heiratete die Schwester Muellers. Durch Otto Mueller lernte er andere Künstler der "Brücke" und deren Umkreis kennen und stellte mit Ihnen aus. Kother lebte ab 1914 in Berlin und war auf Ausstellungen der "Sturm"-Galerie und der "Novembergruppe" vertreten. Arbeiten wurden auch 1915 in der Galerie Emil Richter ausgestellt.

18th century oval pastel portrait of an elegant woman, circa 1790, approx 18w x 25 h cms, framed and glazed. -Provenance: These items have been consigned from the private collection of Dr Michael Bishop. A geologist by training who specialised in the search for evidence of early human settlements in Britain, Dr Bishop spent his career working as a curator at a number of museums across the country. He later set up a business which aimed to place letters, manuscripts and other personal memorabilia in specialist private and public collections all over the world.
19th century full length portrait silhouette, named to William Hector Spearman, right facing, approx 27 x 17.5 cms; a portrait silhouette with body colour of Dr John James, born 1782, Canon of Peterborough Cathedral for forty years until his death in 1868, approx 25 x 19.5 cms; another to Sir Benjamin Hawes (1797-1862) Whig politician MP for Lambeth (known as Hawes the soap-boiler), cut by J.Gapp Chain Pier, approx 14w x 23 h cms. This lot includes another portrait silhouette of T.Bish, note to verso states that he was the father of Thomas Bish (1779-1842) British politician, who worked as a stockbroker and held a government contract for the lottery. -Provenance: These items have been consigned from the private collection of Dr Michael Bishop.
