DAVID BACKHOUSE F.R.B.S. (1941- ), Bronze study with nude girl seated on a high stool, inscribed "Backhouse `75, 4/6", 14" high David Backhouse sculptor and designer lives near Bath and also has a studio in Brantome, France. His early career was spent working and travelling in Europe where he was particularly involved with portrait commissions. He has made many public sculptures notably Cloaked Horseman for Bristol City Centre, Centaurs for Whiteleys London W2, The Stream of Life for Central Square Telford and Dolphin Family for London Docklands. He says of his work "The themes are simple and universal: the interdependence of nature and humanity, the search for balance and harmony. My sculptures are meditations on the human and animal condition in the modern world, reflecting loss and tragedy, hope and delight, and above all tenacity of spirit".

While he had missed the early battles, he was able to record the events before Sebastopol. He was struck by the plight of the common soldier "miserable looking beings .... covered with mud, dirt and rags". In May 1855 Simpson accompanied Lord Raglan on the expedition to Kertch and observed the first attack on Sebastopol in June. He wrote at the time "it was a wild orchestra of sound, never to be forgotten".

A Selection of Paintings by Henry George Hewitt HENRY GEORGE HEWITT (1864-1911) Self Portrait of the Artist, quarter-length, wearing a tie and jacket, signed with initials `H.G.H` (upper left) oil on canvas 18 x 13 1/2 in (45.7 x 34.3cm) Henry George Hewitt received his initial art instruction in Hereford before being admitted to the R.A. Schools in 1882. The Hereford Times of July 15th 1882 hailed the selection of Hewitt and fellow Hereford artist William Adams into the Royal Academy Schools that year as "an honour for the old City and will be a welcome piece of news to all who take a pride in the successful effects of local genius". His first exhibited work at the R.A. was `The Track of the Whirlwind` (1892). Later he studied under Philip Hermogenes Calderon RA at St. Johns Wood. Between 1895 and 1899 he acted as one of the principals of the St John`s Wood Art School. He later lived in Godalming and Haslemere before returning to Hereford later in his life. Josef Karl Stieler 1781-1858, Portrait Miniature- A young woman, bust-length in an Italianate courtyard wearing a green dress, her hair curled and holding a bible, opaque colour on ivory, signed, 5.5x6.5cm: to include seven further early 20th century miniatures by and after various hands to include examples depicting possibly a European Royal couple; Napoleon Bonaparte and other young ladies and gentlemen, (8) Note: Joseph Karl Stieler taught in the Parisian atelier of Francois Gerard, a student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1808, he established himself as an independent painter. In 1816, he travelled to Vienna to paint the portrait of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Between February and April 1820, he worked on his portrait of Ludwig Ludwig van Beethoven which is the most well-known representation of the composer today.
