See illustrationProvenance: The Estate of the late Mary Spencer-Watson, Dunshay Manor, Swanage, DorsetGeorge Spencer-Watson was an English portrait artist of the Late Romantic School and sometimes worked in the style of the Italian Renaissance. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1932. He was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy from 1889, exhibited there from 1891 and also at the Paris Salon. He married Hilda and they had a daughter Mary Spencer-Watson (1913-2006) who was a sculptor.

Ivor Robert Jones (1913-1996) is best known for the sculpture of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square installed in 1971. His career included teaching at Goldsmiths and exhibiting at the Royal Academy. This tender portrait study of Augustus John, produced in an edition of 20, is amongst his better known work.
