Circle of Philip Wickstead (1763-1786) ''Mrs Bryan Edwards'' - Seated in a grand house receiving correspondence from her attendant servant Inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 73cm by 61cm (oval) Philip Wickstead is best known for painting the planters and well-heeled individuals of Jamaica during the latter part of the 18th century. It is believed that Wickstead may have undertaken some early training in the studio of Zohan Zoffany. In 1774 Wickstead was taken to Jamaica by his patron William Beckford. The sitter of the portrait as described as ''Mrs Bryan Edwards'' could possibly be the mother of Bryan Edwards (1743-1800) MP and Historian of Jamaica. Mrs Bryan Edwards nee Elizabeth Bayly was widowed in 1758 and the maintenance and education of her children (including Bryan Edwards Jnr) was undertaken by their uncle Zacchary Bayly, a wealthy merchant of Jamaica. see illustration
