After Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) GENERAL GEORGE AUGUSTUS ELLIOT, LORD HEATHFIELD OF GIBRALTAR, standing half-length, in full military uniform, holding the key to the fortress of Gibraltar, oil on canvas, 83cm x 65cm, (32.7in x 25.5in), unframed (distressed) *** General Elliot held the British fortress during the siege of 1779-83 by the Spanish. He was created Lord Heathfield in 1787, during which year the original portrait by Reynolds was painted. It was purchased for the nation in 1824 and is now in the National Gallery, (NG111).
