A 1930s aviation pin badge comprising a button badge bearing a photographic portrait and legend "Welcome Gen I Balbo" with bronzed model monoplane dependant on a tri-colour ribbon. [Italo Balbo (1896 - 1940) Italian Blackshirt leader, Italian Marshal of the Air Force and celebrated aviator. In 1930 Balbo led twelve Savoia-Marchetti S.55 flying boats from Italy to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In a later flight twenty-four seaplanes flew round-trip from Rome to the Century of Progress in Chicago, Illinois. From Chicago they flew to New York City with an escort of 36 U.S. airplanes. Balbo was featured on the cover of Time magazine and President Roosevelt invited him to lunch where he was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross. This badge likely dates to the period of this trip to the US.]
Denys Corbett Wilson (1882-1915, Irish aviation pioneer and Royal Flying Corps pilot casualty) A photographic profile portrait in oval gold plated pendant frame under glass, the subtly convex back engraved "Denys Corbett Wilson, Royal Flying Corps, Born Sept 24 1882, Imber Court - Thames Ditton, Killed during a Reconnaissance over Fournes in Flanders, May 10 1915. [On 22 April 1912 Denys Corbett Wilson became the first pilot to fly from Great Britain to Ireland, doing so in a time of 100 minutes piloting a Bleriot, taking off from Goodwick in Pembrokeshire and landing at Crane near Enniscorthy in county Wexford. As a Lieutenant serving in the Third Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, on 10 May 1915 Corbett-Wilson and his observer were on a reconnaissance mission in a Morane Parasol when their aircraft was struck by an enemy shell. Both were reported to have been killed instantly. He is buried in the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.]
