P. M. Talbot (early 20th century), "Hell has no fury" Portrait of Cristabel Pankhurst, oil on canvas, unsigned, 40 cm x 30 cm, gilt frame. Label verso. Dame Christabel Harriette Pankhurst, (1880 - 1958), was a suffragette born in Manchester. A co-founder of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), she directed its militant actions from exile in France from 1912 to 1913. In 1914 she supported the war against Germany. After the war she moved to the United States, where she worked as an evangelist for the Second Adventist movement.

On close inspection there are also two small damage areas with retouching one located on the left hand and the other on the right hand, lower quarter sections. There is a impressed damage line in the canvas, approximately 2 centimetres in length, located to the right of the figure's neck. There is a light vertical score mark on the surface, approximately 10 centimetres in length, located in the bottom right hand quarter section in proximity to the corner.

There is the odd chip damage mark to the surface throughout generally and in particular another pushed and impressed damage mark to the canvas, approximately one centimetre in length, located on the figure's left cheek.

Vase with portrait on brass two handle urn base - provably didn't start out like this as glass looks uneven where stuck to brass base. Other vase on brass base maybe a marriage, gilt rubbed very badly. Two other small pieces in ok condition. Gilt is rubbed in places on all pieces. . Miss S A Harding (British, 19th Century) - Portrait oil onn canvas painting of Elizabeth Carter on pony (1717-1806), oil on canvas, Elizabeth Carter (1717 - 1806) was one of the most remarkable and learned women of the 18th century. Tutored by her clergyman father, she taught herself ancient and modern languages, history, geography, astronomy and mathematics. She was also most proficient in needlework and domestic science. Elizabeth Carter rapidly gained a reputation as a poet, essay writer and translator of Epictetus, the Greek philosopher. She made a decision not to marry so that she could continue to study and write and remain independent. She became a member of the ' Bluestockings ' a group of likeminded, freethinking literary women. She was praised in society circles as an example of what women could achieve in the enlightened 18th century England. Modern feminists now acknowledge that she made female intellectual endeavour respectable. The painting of same hand and detailing from a painting sold through another auction house in 2015 whose verso was detailed with artist name and notation. Set within original wooden gilt plaster frame. Measures 87 cm x 101 cm.

Taylor, 1719.⁂ The first of three volumes, Further Adventures and Serious Reflections were published in 1719 and 1720 respectively. A loosely-inserted invoice from Sangorski & Sutcliffe (dated 1936) details the extent of the internal cleaning and binding repairs.

America.- Meares (John) Voyages...from China to the North West Coast of America, first edition, list of subscribers, engraved portrait frontispiece, 10 engraved maps and charts, some folding, 17 sepia-printed plates, some folding, a few with short tears, some light spotting and offsetting, uncut in contemporary marbled boards, rebacked, edges worn, [Abbey, Travel 594; Hill 1126; Sabin 47260; Howes M468], 4to, Printed at the Logographic Press, 1790.⁂ A good, uncut copy (measuring 312 x 235mm.) of "one of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America in general and on Alaska in particular" (Lada-Morcarski). Meares engaged in fur-trading in the Pacific North-West and established a base at Nootka Sound. It was his claim to the land here that led to the Nootka controversy and almost full-scale war between Britain and Spain.

Dickens (Charles).- Catalogue of the Beautiful Collection of Modern Pictures, Water-Colour Drawings, and Objects of Art, of Charles Dickens deceased, 12pp., first edition, sale catalogue, contemporary ink signature of Alexander Walker at foot of title with note in pencil "I attended the sale" and prices in manuscript (ink over pencil), one leaf chipped at fore-edge, newspaper cuttings concerning Dickens's will and sale report pasted to front free endpapers, loose in old brown wrappers, upper wrapper inscribed "Dickens' sale catalogue Priced July 9th 1870" in ink at head, spine worn, covers detached, edges chipped, 8vo, Christie, Manson & Woods, 1870.⁂ The auction of Dickens's pictures was held a month after his death and was well-attended, with prices greatly exceeding expectations. The highest prices were for W.P.Frith's Dolly Varden (1000 guineas) which was commissioned by Dickens from the artist, Clarkson Stanfield's The Eddystone Lighthouse (990 gns) which was painted as scenery for the amateur production of Wilkie Collins's The Lighthouse in 1855, and Daniel Maclise's portrait of Dickens (660gns) presented to him by his publishers on the completion of Nicholas Nickleby in 1839. The stuffed raven which was the model for Grip in Barnaby Rudge fetched 120gns.

Astrological spoof.- [Swift (Jonathan)] A Famous Prediction of Merlin, the British Wizard; written above a Thousand Years ago, and relating to this present Year, first edition, single sheet printed on both sides, woodcut portrait at head, text partially printed in black letter, lower blank corner cut away, edges slightly browned, preserved in modern board folder, [Foxon S849; Rothschild 2002], folio, Printed, and Sold by A. Bladwin, 1709.⁂ Swift's rare final contribution to the literary practical joke relating to John Partridge (1644-1715), a shoemaker-cum-astrologer, who began issuing almanacs in 1680 which proved very popular. In early 1708, under the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff, Swift published Predictions for the Year 1708, in which he foretold Partridge's death on 29th March; on 30th March the pamphlet The Accomplishment of the First of Mr. Bickerstaffe's Predictions appeared, giving a detailed account of Partridge's death, which was initially taken seriously and Stationer's Hall deleted Partridge's name from its rolls. Despite protesting that he was alive, Swift's joke had succeeded and a number of further "Bickerstaffiana" pamphlets appeared over the next year. This is one of two printings of this folio sheet with Baldwin's imprint, and further piracies also appeared. All are rare; ESTC lists nine copies of the Badwin edition, but conflates the two imprints - this (which is given precedence) has "year" in the last line of introduction as opposed to "for the present year".
