An Historic And Documentary Military Archive Group. With Gallantry Honors from a Lancashire Fallen Hero of The Great War. Second Lieutenant Frank Clarke Place MM attached Royal Lancaster Regiment (1/4thBn), killed in action 22.09.1918. Northern France, aged 21, comprising his Military Cross and three further WWI Service Medals, the archive comprising 30 articulate and descriptive letters, written by the bright, optimistic and brave young soldier, between his enlistment on 22nd March 1916 to the 22 Battalion Royal Fusiliers and his last posting, as a temporary Officer in the Royal Lancaster Regiment, in September 1918, principally sent to his sister Mabel in Lancashire. Two moving letters from an Officer and a Chaplain respectively, describe the events and emotions on the days of his death and burial. Further certificates and papers plus 26 letters written by Frank Places's older brother Len, also a soldier during WWI, plus later family letters complete the written archive. Also included are Frank's Military compass in leather case, his bronze death plaque, framed, and three general WWI service medals belonging to Lieutenant Len Place, Frank's Brother. The son of a professional photography business, in Preston, there is an excellent watercolour drawing portrait of Frank Place in uniform, plus several other photographs of his sister Mabel plus other family members. Frank Place's letters span his time in training in England and Scotland, a good proportion sent from France including several from the trenches, particularly one describing the unimaginable action which brought the recommendation for his Military Cross, and time spent in hospitals, once for trenchfoot, all told in a calm, almost matter-of-fact style. The confirmation of the award of Second Lieutenant Frank Clarke Place's Military Cross arrived the day after his death, only a few weeks before the end of the war.
