Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) John Fitzgerald Villiers, 1st Earl Grandison (c. 1684-1766) Oil on canvas, signed and dated bottom left: A Ramsay 1743, 124.5x99.1cm. Known as "Good Earl John", John Fitzgerald Villiers was the eldest son of Brigadier-General the Hon. Edward Villiers and Katharine Fitzgerald, Viscountess Grandison of Limerick. She had been a ward of Charles II, while he was the eldest son of the 4th Viscount Grandison. John was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1706 he married Frances Cary, duaghter of the 4th Viscount Falkland. He greatly improved his estates at Dromana by plantation and was briefly member of Parliament for Old Sarum in 1705. He became governor of the city and county of Waterford and built the village of Villierstown. In 1699 he had succeeded his paternal grandfather as 5th Viscount Grandison of Limerick and was subsequently created Earl Grandison in 1721. He was also a privy councillor. For further information on the family, see Thérèse Muir Mackenzie, Dromana, The Memoirs of an Irish Family, especially page 178 where the portrait is reproduced when it was still at Dromana. The portrait was painted in what Alastair Smart has designated Ramsay's 'first style', during the years 1738 to 1751 when he successfully established himself in London after his first visit to Italy. It is listed as no. 205 in Smart's Allan Ramsay A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings, Yale University Press, 1999. For further discussion of Ramsay's work during the early 1740s, see the same author's Allan Ramsay: Painter, Essayist and Man of the Enlightenment, Yale University Press, 1991, pages 40-93
