A 19th century family portrait, oil on canvas. Depicting a Victorian family having a musical recital evening. To the verso in pencil a history of the individuals, 34.5cm x 29cm Condition Report: Loose in frame, paper backing partially removed, the surface of the painting with some crazing, slight scratching and minor losses to paint, overall the surface has yellowed somewhat. Wear, chipping to edges and restuck chip to gilt frame.

Educated by her brother William she became a noted astronomer in her own right, being awarded the Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal in 1828 and later honorary membership of the society. Acting as William's assistant as Court Astronomer Caroline was the first woman to hold a government position and to receive a salary as a scientist.This volume of Philosophical Transactions also contains William Herschel's 'On the Method of observing the Changes that happen to the fixed Stars', and papers on the discovery of native gold in Ireland.
Astronomy.- Kepler (Johannes) Opera Omnia, edited by Christian Frisch, 8 vol. in 9, first complete edition, portrait, plates, 2 folding tables and 2 folding facsimile manuscripts, ink ownership stamp and annotations to endpapers, foxed and browned, contemporary roan-backed boards, rubbed, joints split, some vol. with original wrappers mounted on pastedowns, preserved in three modern cloth slip-cases, 8vo, Frankfurt, 1858-71.⁂ The definitive edition of Kepler's works, containing all his published texts.
Mathematics.- Saunderson (Nicholas) The Elements of Algebra, in Ten Books, 2 vol., first edition, fine engraved portrait by Vandergucht, list of subscribers and errata leaf in vol.1, 9 engraved plates, all but one folding, stain to lower outer corner of last few leaves of vol.2, otherwise a good clean copy, contemporary calf, rubbed and scuffed, rebacked with gilt spines and red & black morocco labels, Cambridge, at the University Press, 1740; and 4 others, algebra, 4to & 8vo (6)⁂ Saunderson (1682-1739) lost his sight from smallpox as a baby but became a distinguished mathematician and friend of Newton and Whiston, whom he succeeded as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1710. One of the engraved plates in this important work depicts his "Palpable Arithmetic", a computer for the use of the blind.
Medicine.- Bonet (Théophile) Sepulchretum sive anatomica practica ex cadaveribus morbo denatis, 3 vol., vol. 1 with half-title, engraved portrait to verso, and title printed in red and black, each title with engraved vignette, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials, vol. 1 & 2 with little marginal worming towards end, some foxing or slight browning, vol. 1 & 3 with front free endpaper loose, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, upper covers detached, spines with loss to labels and ends chipped, worn, joints split, folio, Geneva, Cramer & Perachon, 1700.⁂ A pioneering work in the field of pathology, first published in Geneva in 1679.

Burre, 1616 § [Moxon (Joseph) A Tutor to Astronomy and Geography...], third edition, lacking half-title and letterpress title (both supplied in facsimile) but with additional engraved title, engraved and woodcut illustrations, occasional soiling, Foyle copy with leather book-label, modern half red morocco, [Wing M3024], Tho. Roycroft, for Joseph Moxon, 1674, folio & 4to; sold not subject to return (2)⁂ The first is the first comprehensive English textbook on surveying.
Newlyn & Society Painter.- Costa (John da, painter, 1867-1931) Sketchbook, signed, c. 35pp., 1f. drawing of a society dinner with added watercolour and heightened with white, the rest pencil sketches, some ff. loose, some ephemera and letters addressed to Mrs da Costa loosely inserted, original cloth sketchbook signed by da Costa on cover, soiled and stained, oblong 4to (215 x 280mm.), [c. 1900] (qty).⁂ John da Costa, was an artist from Devon, he studied in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Later, he joined the "Newlyn School". He did much painting in Scotland. He also painted in the United States and did a portrait of Cornelia, daughter of George W. Vanderbilt, as well as the daughters of other notable Americans. His portrait of Doris Duke at age 12, only child of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Duke, was pictured in the New York Times.
Browne (Sir Thomas) Pseudodoxia Epidemica: or, Enquiries into very many Received Tenents And commonly presumed Truths, Together with the Religio Medici, sixth edition, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials, lacking frontispiece portrait and leaf *1 (title to Pseudodoxia Epidemica), but with general title and title to Religio Medici, occasional slight browning or spotting, a few small rust spots, affecting a couple of letters on F3 and F32, final gathering working loose, hinges cracked, contemporary calf, rebacked, worn, endpapers renewed, [Wing B5165 & B5176; Keynes 10 & 79], 4to, Printed by J.R[edmayne]. for Nath. Ekins, 1672.⁂ According to Keynes, the title to Pseudodoxia Epidemica was often discarded by binders who thought it was a duplicate of the almost identical general title. Keynes also asserts that this edition of the Religio Medici was never published separately.
