19th Century English School 'Portrait of a seated gentleman', oil on canvas, unsigned, in painted gilt frame, measurement excluding the frame 72cm x 62cmProvenance: By repute this painting was one of a pair sold from the Estate of James Thomas-Bree. James Bree (1923-2000) trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama 1947-1949 where he won the Fogarty prize. He performed in a variety of roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, on the West End and various TV productions. The canvas has been relined. Overall wear and signs of age to the frame. Some crazing to the paint on the frame. Crazing and cracklure to the paint surface also.

William Powell Frith RA (1819-1909) oil on canvas Mary Queen of Scots' Farewell to France, Mary standing on the stern of a ship with tear rolling down her cheek and handkerchief in her hand, signed and dated 51 lower right, 34.5 x 30cm, in ornate gilt frame with title and artist's name to lower edge, together with a photocopy of the original receipt when the vendor's late father purchased the painting at a Christie, Manson & Woods auction in December 1971, where it was listed as having been previously owned by Lord Holden. In 1987 the painting was loaned for an exhibition held by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Mary Queen of Scots' execution, in preparation for which some conservation work and a report on the painting was undertaken by Katherine Woodgate-Jones, a copy of which is included along with correspondence relating to the loan. A similar painting owned by the National Trust is at Dinefwr near Carmarthen, Wales
