Crawhall (Joseph) Chaplets from Coquet-side, one of 16 extra-illustrated copies for presentation by the author, [iv], 83pp., [3pp.], 44 woodcuts in the text, including 19 hand-coloured, with 6 extra plates from Crawhall's 'Compleatest Angling Booke', 1859, tipped in, including etched portrait of Walton on India paper, 3 others etchings, 1 steel engraving and 1 woodcut, initialled postcard from Charles Keene and related newpaper cutting loosely inserted, some foxing, a little offsetting, contemporary straight-grain morocco-backed cloth, t.e.g., some staining to text margins, light soiling, [Westwood & Satchell p.69], 8vo, [Newcastle upon Tyne, Robert Robinson], 1873. *** The rarest of Crawhall's angling publications, one of an edition of only 16 extra-illustrated copies from a total printing of 100. Postcard from Keene asks Crawhall to allow his friend, A.C. Stannus, "the Champion Irish Trout Fisher ... ", to enter one of his pictures of the Coquet into Crawhall's exhibition. This copy also has a woodcut vignette on p.33 which is coloured in red as well as blue. Crawhall made gifts of this book in both the standard edition and this limited extra-illustrated edition of 16. A curious mix of the old and new, 'Chaplets' contains several poems celebrating angling, comic pieces, anecdotes about Newcastle and a selection from his contributions to 'Newcastle's Fishers' Garlands'. The only rarer work is the unattainable single copy of 'Angling Quips and Sporting Skits'.
Crawhall (Joseph) Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke, signed presentation copy from the author to his daughter, one of 100 large paper copies, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, linen pockets to pastedowns, as described in previous lot, 3 original poems in Crawhall's hand tipped in, 2pp. A.L.s from Crawhall to Elspeth and 6pp. A.L.s from Thomas Westwood to the author tipped in, pressed leaf preserved in tissue which Crawhall has lettered "from tree over Wordsworth's grave. 1895" loosely inserted in front pouch, related contemporary newspaper cuttings tipped in, copious ink inscriptions to the blank ruled pp. entitled 'Fysshe Stories', lacking associated woodblock, original half vellum, gilt, ties, light soiling, darkened, 4to, Field & Tuer, Leadenhall Press, 1885. *** Ink inscription to title reads "Elspeth Challoner from her father Joseph Crawhall. 1885". The story written on the blank ff., "My first 20-pounder", was written by Rev. Hugh Bellamy in 1895. Crawhall's letter reads "My darling Ess, Just a line to wish you many happy returns ... I wish you to accept "Olde Ffrendes" & the "Wallet booke" as birthday presents - Fred will get them from Tuer on presenting my note. I had a jolly long letter from Keene yesterday ... I'm keeping fairly well ... tho' I have my tumble down capers with this weary head - great longing for the old mother back, but I daren't say so for fear she hastens home - fact is we've lived far too much for each other ... ". He ends with a humourous self-portrait. Contains one of the boldest comic self-caricatures on p.90 where Crawhall depicts himself in tandem as two bulls dragging a ploughshare, taken from a Blake illustration to 'Jerusalem'. Although lacking the woodblock (it is thought there is only 1 copy remaining with it), this appears to be one of the best collectable copies of this work.
Crawhall (Joseph) Several Sovereigns for a Shilling!, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, with small original humourous self-portrait, [24pp.], lithographed illustrations by the author throughout, browning, particularly to first few ff., several ff. with edges and corners chipped and some loose, original pictorial wrappers with ribbon binding, worn, oblong 4to, London and Newcastle upon Tyne, Hamilton, Adams & Co. and Mawson, Swan & Morgan, 1886. *** Inscription reads "For my beloved daughter Elspeth."; the charming pen and ink self-portrait depicts the author as bald, with a long, pointed beard. This children's book contained material he had been working on for some time. The preface includes an engraving of Andrew Tuer pointing to an open book, and note also the familiar crow on a sheaf of wheat at the end, taken from the Crawhall coat of arms. Apparently it met "with a prompt and most generous response", according to Crawhall in the preface of 'A Jubilee Thought'. These illustrations of British monarchs came about due to the success of his royal portraits in 'Chorographia'.
Bury (Adrian) Joseph Crawhall [III], The Man & The Artist, number 275 of 990 copies, 251pp., half-title, foreword by Sir Alfred Munnings, tipped-in colour frontispiece, mounted portrait of Crawhall III, numerous plates including many colour, original pen and ink drawing, 2 newspaper articles and plate loosely inserted, original cloth, gilt, t.e.g., 4to, Charles Skilton, 1958 [1957]. *** Original signed pen and ink drawing, 125 x 175mm., depicts two figures, a horse and dogs, with monogrammed initials "JC", apparently a page from an early sketchbook of Joseph Crawhall III.

Contains extensive bibliography, list of exhibitions containing his work, 1894 and 1912 exhibition catalogues, Alexander Reid-Crawhall correspondence, a description of the W.A. Coats collection and Sir William Burrell's Crawhall purchases, 1916-52.
Bewick (Thomas) Memoir ... Written by Himself, 1822-1828, xxxii, 274pp., reprint of the 1862 first and only prior edition, half-title, portrait frontispiece, introduction by Selwyn Image, 61 illustrations by the author, a little light foxing to first few ff., original cloth, extremities very slightly rubbed, a few small marks to lower cover, 8vo, John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1924. *** The first edition of this work by Bewick (1753-1828) was published in 1862, 34 years after his death; it was decorated with a selection of engravings originally intended for his unpublished 'History of British Fishes'. He had set about writing his memoirs in 1822. No doubt he was acquainted with Joseph Crawhall I (1793-1853). Crawhall's son Joseph III reproduces an initial block 'JC' engraved by Bewick in his 'Newcastle Fishers' Garlands', 1864, and several Crawhall caricatures, one inscribed 'Mr. Bewick with J-C's [Joseph Crawhall II's] Comp'ts.', were sold in the dispersal of the Bewick estate in 1884.
Bewick (Thomas) Thomas Bewick and the Fables of Aesop, 61pp., one of 518 copies, half-title, portrait frontispiece, biographical sketch by John W. Borden, history of the fables by Janet S. Krueger, illustrations by Bewick throughout, original leaf from the first edition of 1818 tipped in, original boards, dust-jacket, San Francisco, Book Club of California, 1983. *** The most collectable copy for the collector of angling books, this incorporates a leaf from the original 1818 Bewick edition, of the fable "The Angler and the Little Fish". Other copies of this book had different fables inserted. Bewick himself was no coarse fisherman for his fable begins "An angler caught a small trout ... ". The same fable in the classic 1722 edition of Aesop by Samuel Croxall begins with "A man was angling in a river and caught a small perch ... ".

The unsigned watercolour of a foxhound is remarkably similar to the work of his grandfather; cf. Vivien Hamilton, Joseph Crawhall 1861-1913, plate 2.
