18th Century Colonial School ‘Elegant Lady in Lace’ Oil on canvas, 82 x 65cm, framed 91 x 75cmOur fashion consultant reports: "She is rather lovely!"I would date it to 1760-5 on the basis of the silk design and style of the sack dress, indoor cap and hair. As to country of origin, there is something not quite British about it (despite the rose) - my gut feeling is that although the silk could be a Spitalfields design, it could also be from Lyon, but of course this doesn't necessarily denote where the sitter is from. (There is a swatch book of silks from 1763 in the V&A with some very similar examples) My feeling is more to do with the pleated lace stomacher which is unusual, and the jewellery of which there is more than a British woman would wear possibly, even for a portrait. She is wearing diamonds, whereas in the UK pearls were the most fashionable at this date except for formal/court dress, yet it seems to me to be by a provincial painter.....Cally BlackmanCally Blackman is a fashion historian, lecturer, and author.

We can assist the buyer with the creation of a replica print for display in the interim. ARTIST STATEMENT: For my final GCSE exam piece, I chose the theme of portraits and decided to initially focus on family and later settle on an image of my Grandma for the final subject. I did at first look at Street Art and decided I wanted a realistic image mixed with some graffiti. I then wrote a poem to illustrate what Grandma means to me. I wanted to link the two generations of Grandma and myself together and thought a traditionally drawn portrait and graffiti would do this. D'Arcy created this piece aged 16 while a student at St. Sampsons High School.
