BRIAN SHIELDS 'BRAAQ', BRITISH (1951-1997), Full portrait of an old soldier, in profile, standing, wearing a bowler hat and overcoat, his scarf blowing in the wind, medals pinned to his lapel and carrying a folded newspaper in his pocket, oil on canvas, signed to lower left braaq "Ann", 25.5cms x 20.5cms.
By Richard Dighton (1785-1880) - three-quarter length double portrait of Admiral Rous with Mr Payne standing to the left, newspaper cutting regarding the death of Admiral Rous great nephew, the Earl of Stradbroke verso, modern inscription verso, watercolour and bodycolour, 7.75" x 6.25". *This double portrait of Admiral Rous and Mr Payne was commissioned in celebration of the testimonial dinner in honour of Admiral Rous (1795-1877). Admiral Rous was MP for Westminster in 1841 and made Lord of the Admiralty by Sir Richard Peel in January 1846. In 1838 he was steward of The Jockey Club in Cheltenham. He owned Sulby Hall in Northamptonshire. George Payne (1803-1878) was a racehorse owner and gambler. He owned horses from 1824-1878 and is seen in the portrait with his famous black and white 'Magpie' colours*
A GEORGE III (NELSON) VINAIGRETTE engraved on the cover with a portrait of Admiral Nelson and the motto "England expects every man to do his duty", the grille stamped with "HMS Victory" and "Trafalgar OCR.21ST.1805", the base engraved with a monogram, within a wreath, by Matthew Linwood, Birmingham 1805, 3cm long. A COUNTER BOX of drum form, the pull-off pierced cover depicting a portrait of Charles I, the body with pierced and engraved sections of flowers and scrolls, the base depicting a portrait of the Queen. Containing 23 die stamped counters depicting further portraits and coats of arms of various Kings and Queens of England, apparently unmarked, 17th century, 11/4" dia. A COUNTER BOX of cylindrical form, the pull-off cover decorated with a relief portrait of Charles I, the base engraved with a figure of Old Father Time, the side segregated into panels engraved with weapons and shields, containing 25 counters of various Kings and Queens, apparently unmarked, 17th century, 1" dia.
