Kazunori Ishibashi (Matsue 1879 - Tokyo 1928) - 'Miss Johnstone' - Oil on canvas portrait. Early 20th century circa 1908 original oil on canvas portrait painting titled 'Miss Johnstone' by the Japanese artist Kazunori Ishibashi. The painting depicting Miss Johnstone in a frontal portrait with gold brooch & dark garments. Signed by the artist on left side of the canvas in bright red pigment. Canvas signed to the verso by artist. Framed & glazed in gesso gilt frame. Canvas measuring approx. 75cm x 62cm.Kazunori Ishibashi was born on June 4th, 1879 in Matsue, Japan. In 1905, he leave Japan for the first time and came to England, where he studied for five years in the Royal Academy schools. In 1908, Miss Johnstone's portrait hung at his first exhibition at the Royal Academy and was the first to be painted by a Japanese artist on purely Western lines. The Times described him as a portrait painted of 'exceptional gifts'. He was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in England, as well as part of the Paris Salon and Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. The painting has been restored and cleaned by Seonaid Wood, Bristol on the 1st May 2002.
Occult / Witchcraft Kit - A Victorian manner composed occult / witchcraft kit, originally believed to have been owned by a witch in the Gloucestershire village of Mickleton. The kit comprising of period 19th century & other items, including: a carved bone wand with a lion's head to top the shaft engraved with various symbols and featuring a hallmarked silver collar, a carved bone coffin shaped box with silver plated spoon, brooch, various rings & pins; animal skulls, a skeleton shaped bone specimen spoon, antler-handled sacrificial dagger, various amulets, religious statuettes, tarot cards, a brass witches headdress with affixed animal skull and amulet, a book featuring various drawings and jottings, black 'witching' mirror, drinking horn, portrait of Beelzebub, various glass bottles, crystals, rune stones and more. All contained within a mahogany case / box with brass pentagram detail to top & handle to side. Together with another leather bound box chest with decorative studs throughout and handle. Measures approx: 85cm x 24cm x 13cm.
William Bruce Ellis Ranken R.O.I. (British school, 1881-1941) - Large oil on canvas painting depicting the artist's sister Dora Witherington Ranken in elegant gown. Signed by artist to lower right corner. Set to a large ornate frame. Measures approx. 130cm x 102cm, including frame 112cm x 84cm.Dora Witherington Ranken:Born on 24.06.1888 (died: 27.05.1927 at Saanen, Switzerland) as the 7th child of Robert Bart Ranken W.S of 7 Albyn Place, Edinburgh and his wife Mary Witherington (nee Dunlop).D.W.R. went to Sommerville College, Oxford, had aspirations as an operatic contralto, and lived, we believe, in Chelsea.The portrait was painted (circa 1912) by her brother William Bruce Ellis Ranken (Born 11.04.1881, died 31.03.1941) who was the forth child, educated at Eton and The Slade. He lived at Warbrook, Eversley, Hants from Circa 1922- 1930.As can be seen from our images, there are no commercial labels; the canvas has been in the private collection of the Ranken family who gifted it to the current owner (there is a vinyl sheet covering this side).

A George III Tortoiseshell Snuff Box, with yellow metal mounts, together with A Horn Snuff Mull, An Ovoid Brass Snuff Box, embossed with a Classical scene and housing a watercolour portrait miniature and A Wax Seal, cased in a turned wooden box (4)Tortoiseshell Snuff Box - some wear to the hinge, but generally good condition. Snuff Mull - small chip to the top of the cover and two cracks forming to the main body. Ovoid Snuff Box - repaired hinge. Wax Seal - cover lacking a large portion of the thread. Seal with a noticeable hairline crack and some crazing.

This new edition was published a year after Grapaldi's death, and is the first to include the portrait on the title. The text is significantly enlarged and corrected, and is supplemented with a table of contents and an index. Our copy with an excellent provenance. Provenance: André L. Simon (1877-1970) wine merchant and writer, gourmet, book collector, and bibliographer. The wine writer Hugh Johnson described him as 'the charismatic leader of the English wine trade for almost all of the first half of the 20th century, and the grand old man of literate connoisseurship for a further 20 years' (engraved bookplate). Peake (Mervyn) Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor, first American edition, signed inscription "from my friend Mervyn" from Graham Greeneto front free endpaper, additionally signed by Peake verso, with provenance note to foot of same page, illustrations by the author, note to pastedown blocked out with black felt tip, original pictorial boards, spine ends lightly rubbed, 8vo, New York, [1967].⁂ A fascinating association copy, with the provenance note stating that it was signed by Peake at Burcot, near Oxford - the place where he would die the same year in the care home run by his brother-in-law. Signed "with the assistance of Dr. Jim Gilmore, wife Sylvia and the N.O.C. of Mr Greene" (Greene here in absentia, having moved to Antibes in 1966).The two writers met in 1937 when Peake had been commissioned to paint Greene's portrait, and had remained friends throughout the following years. In 1946 Greene read the manuscript of Titus Groan and earnestly recommended that Eyre and Spottiswood publish it, which they immediately agreed to do.

With dated ownership inscription of Robert "Bob" Freeman (1936-2019), Beatles photographer who shot some of the band's most recognizable images which featured on several of their album covers.

Smith (Sally Lou, binder).- Cleverdon (Douglas) The Engravings of David Jones: A Survey, number 206 of 260 copies on Arches, from an edition limited to 371, mounted portrait frontispiece, numerous plates, the majority printed from the original blocks, bound in black goatskin, by Sally Lou Smith, with design of a tree with bare branches of tooled lines in gilt & blind and onlaid scrunched black goatskin trunk (smaller on lower cover), the trees partly obscured by a vertical "window" of grey goatskin inlaid with thick lines made up of thin parallel strips of various green, blue & grey goatskin overlaid with tracery of thicker dark grey goatskin branches, titled in gilt across spine, black goatskin doublures with vertical strip of grey goatskin inlaid with dark grey branches reflecting those on the covers, lime green and grey Japanese paper endleaves, t.e.g., others uncut but gilded, signed ''SLS.'' at foot of rear turn-in, c.325 x 245mm., preserved in black goatskin-backed black cloth felt-lined drop-back box, spine titled in gilt, cloth very slightly mottled by damp, with small ownership sticker of Gillian Chipperfield to bottom of box, 4to, printed by the Rampant Lions Press of Cambridge for Clover Hill Editions, 1981.⁂ A striking designer binding by this renowned binder.Sally Lou Smith (1925-2007) was a Fellow and President of Designer Bookbinders and a highly regarded teacher of bookbinding. Although born and raised in America she spent most of her career in Britain. A comprehensive survey of her work appeared in The New Bookbinder 21 (2001).The binding was commissioned by Lady Gillian Chipperfield who was a student of Sally Lou Smith, and has been donated by her to raise funds for Age Exchange, a charity for those with dementia and older, isolated people in Blackheath, London. The charity provides art and music therapy and was a pioneer in using reminiscence as a major help for those with memory loss.

Vanderbanck after Sylvester Brounower, this a little creased and working loose, upper corner of title soiled and strengthened verso, some spotting / mostly light foxing or staining, endpapers browned, contemporary calf, spine in compartments, worn, but holding firm, [Wing L2740; Pforzheimer 601], folio, Printed for Awnsham and John Churchil, at the Black Swan in Pater-Noster-Row, and Samuel Manship, at the Ship in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange, 1694.⁂ The second and expanded edition of Locke's key philosophical work. Some of the new material in this edition arose out of Locke's correspondence in the 1680s and 1690s with the young Irish scientist William Molyneux. The first issue is 'Printed for Thomas Dring...'. Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland).- Wilding (Dorothy) Portrait photograph print, signed "Elizabeth R" and dated 1953, ink faded to pale brown, signed 'Dorothy Wilding' in the negative, spotting and staining to mount, not affecting image, print 305 x 415 mm., frame 500 x 655 mm, framed and glazed, [1952].⁂ Dorothy Wilding (1893-1976) was the first photographer to take official images of the Queen, after her accession to the throne in 1952. Wilding had experience as a royal photographer, having taken official portraits at the Coronation of King George VI, as well as photographing the King for use on currency and stamps. This resulted in Wilding becoming the first female photographer to receive a Royal Warrant.
India.- Forbes (James) Oriental Memoirs, 4 vol., first edition, half-titles, engraved portrait and 85 engraved or lithographed plates only (of 93), some stipple-engraved, some aquatint, some finely hand-coloured, mostly after W.Hooker, with errata leaf at end of vol.4, some foxing, endpapers rather damp-mottled, contemporary calf, gilt, rebacked, rubbed, some worming to covers, vol.2 leather peeling and rather worn, [Anker 148; Fine Bird Books p.96; Nissen ZBI 1409; cf.Abbey Travel 436, later remainder issue], 4to, Printed for the Author by T. Bensley, 1813.⁂ An excellent account of the culture, flora and fauna of India by a writer for the East India Company. Forbes spent seventeen years in India and filled numerous volumes with writings and sketches. The fine hand-coloured plates are mostly of natural history, particularly birds and fruits.Provenance: Nelson Matcham (bookplate, that in vol.1 with inscription reading "Mermaids Matcham Vol.2 164"). The relevant page reads " near the coast we saw many other sorts of fish, but did not meet with any of the mermaids so often mentioned in these seas; and especially by Mr. Matcham, a gentleman of great respectability, and at that time superintendant of the company's marine at Bombay. I have heard him declare that when in command of a trading vessel at Mozambique, Mombaz, and Melinda...he frequently saw these extraordinary animals from six to twelve feet long..."
Execution Broadside.- Trial and Execution of Thomas Williams & John Bishop, Murder of an Italian Boy, [5th December 1831], 375 x 220mm., woodcut of gallows at head, broadside, some restoration to upper edge, folds and minor surface dirt, Printed at Birt's wholesale and retail Song and Ballad Warehouse, Seven Dials, [1831]; together with 4pp. from a copy of The Sunday Budget with woodcut portrait of 'The Italian Boy' and his accused, November 27, 1831 (2)⁂ The murder of Carlo Ferrari, "an Italian boy", came 3 years after the infamous Burke & Hare body snatching horrors of 1828. Ferrari's body was taken to King's College dissecting room and his teeth sold to a dentist.
