Kazunori Ishibashi (Matsue 1879 - Tokyo 1928) - 'Miss Johnstone' - Oil on canvas portrait. Early 20th century circa 1908 original oil on canvas portrait painting titled 'Miss Johnstone' by the Japanese artist Kazunori Ishibashi. The painting depicting Miss Johnstone in a frontal portrait with gold brooch & dark garments. Signed by the artist on left side of the canvas in bright red pigment. Canvas signed to the verso by artist. Framed & glazed in gesso gilt frame. Canvas measuring approx. 75cm x 62cm.Kazunori Ishibashi was born on June 4th, 1879 in Matsue, Japan. In 1905, he leave Japan for the first time and came to England, where he studied for five years in the Royal Academy schools. In 1908, Miss Johnstone's portrait hung at his first exhibition at the Royal Academy and was the first to be painted by a Japanese artist on purely Western lines. The Times described him as a portrait painted of 'exceptional gifts'. He was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in England, as well as part of the Paris Salon and Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. The painting has been restored and cleaned by Seonaid Wood, Bristol on the 1st May 2002.

The kit comprising of period 19th century & other items, including: a carved bone wand with a lion's head to top the shaft engraved with various symbols and featuring a hallmarked silver collar, a carved bone coffin shaped box with silver plated spoon, brooch, various rings & pins; animal skulls, a skeleton shaped bone specimen spoon, antler-handled sacrificial dagger, various amulets, religious statuettes, tarot cards, a brass witches headdress with affixed animal skull and amulet, a book featuring various drawings and jottings, black 'witching' mirror, drinking horn, portrait of Beelzebub, various glass bottles, crystals, rune stones and more. All contained within a mahogany case / box with brass pentagram detail to top & handle to side. Together with another leather bound box chest with decorative studs throughout and handle. Measures approx: 85cm x 24cm x 13cm.

William Bruce Ellis Ranken R.O.I. (British school, 1881-1941) - Large oil on canvas painting depicting the artist's sister Dora Witherington Ranken in elegant gown. Signed by artist to lower right corner. Set to a large ornate frame. Measures approx. 130cm x 102cm, including frame 112cm x 84cm.Dora Witherington Ranken:Born on 24.06.1888 (died: 27.05.1927 at Saanen, Switzerland) as the 7th child of Robert Bart Ranken W.S of 7 Albyn Place, Edinburgh and his wife Mary Witherington (nee Dunlop).D.W.R. went to Sommerville College, Oxford, had aspirations as an operatic contralto, and lived, we believe, in Chelsea.The portrait was painted (circa 1912) by her brother William Bruce Ellis Ranken (Born 11.04.1881, died 31.03.1941) who was the forth child, educated at Eton and The Slade. He lived at Warbrook, Eversley, Hants from Circa 1922- 1930.As can be seen from our images, there are no commercial labels; the canvas has been in the private collection of the Ranken family who gifted it to the current owner (there is a vinyl sheet covering this side).

This new edition was published a year after Grapaldi's death, and is the first to include the portrait on the title. The text is significantly enlarged and corrected, and is supplemented with a table of contents and an index. Our copy with an excellent provenance. Provenance: André L. Simon (1877-1970) wine merchant and writer, gourmet, book collector, and bibliographer. The wine writer Hugh Johnson described him as 'the charismatic leader of the English wine trade for almost all of the first half of the 20th century, and the grand old man of literate connoisseurship for a further 20 years' (engraved bookplate). Peake (Mervyn) Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor, first American edition, signed inscription "from my friend Mervyn" from Graham Greeneto front free endpaper, additionally signed by Peake verso, with provenance note to foot of same page, illustrations by the author, note to pastedown blocked out with black felt tip, original pictorial boards, spine ends lightly rubbed, 8vo, New York, [1967].⁂ A fascinating association copy, with the provenance note stating that it was signed by Peake at Burcot, near Oxford - the place where he would die the same year in the care home run by his brother-in-law. Signed "with the assistance of Dr. Jim Gilmore, wife Sylvia and the N.O.C. of Mr Greene" (Greene here in absentia, having moved to Antibes in 1966).The two writers met in 1937 when Peake had been commissioned to paint Greene's portrait, and had remained friends throughout the following years. In 1946 Greene read the manuscript of Titus Groan and earnestly recommended that Eyre and Spottiswood publish it, which they immediately agreed to do.

Although born and raised in America she spent most of her career in Britain. A comprehensive survey of her work appeared in The New Bookbinder 21 (2001).The binding was commissioned by Lady Gillian Chipperfield who was a student of Sally Lou Smith, and has been donated by her to raise funds for Age Exchange, a charity for those with dementia and older, isolated people in Blackheath, London. The charity provides art and music therapy and was a pioneer in using reminiscence as a major help for those with memory loss.

Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland).- Wilding (Dorothy) Portrait photograph print, signed "Elizabeth R" and dated 1953, ink faded to pale brown, signed 'Dorothy Wilding' in the negative, spotting and staining to mount, not affecting image, print 305 x 415 mm., frame 500 x 655 mm, framed and glazed, [1952].⁂ Dorothy Wilding (1893-1976) was the first photographer to take official images of the Queen, after her accession to the throne in 1952. Wilding had experience as a royal photographer, having taken official portraits at the Coronation of King George VI, as well as photographing the King for use on currency and stamps. This resulted in Wilding becoming the first female photographer to receive a Royal Warrant.

Bensley, 1813.⁂ An excellent account of the culture, flora and fauna of India by a writer for the East India Company. Forbes spent seventeen years in India and filled numerous volumes with writings and sketches. The fine hand-coloured plates are mostly of natural history, particularly birds and fruits.Provenance: Nelson Matcham (bookplate, that in vol.1 with inscription reading "Mermaids Matcham Vol.2 164"). Ferrari's body was taken to King's College dissecting room and his teeth sold to a dentist.
