Crowley (Aleister) Ambergris. A Selection from the Poems, first edition, portrait frontispiece, Betty May's copy with pencil note of provenance to endpaper, original boards, lettered in gilt, spine a little browned, spine ends and corners a little bumped, rubbed, 8vo, Elkin Mathews, 1910.⁂ An interesting association copy of this scarce collection. The pencil note states "This copy belonged to Mrs. Betty Sedgewick, formerly one of Jacob Epstein's Models. She gave evidence in the case of Crowley v. Hamnett in April 1934". Betty Sedgwick was better known as Betty May (1894-?1980) was a bohemian dancer and model who led an eventful life. Her third husband, Frederick Loveday, became an acolyte of Crowley's. The pair travelled to Sicily and took part in some of Crowley's rituals, although May only tentatively in order to avoid being thrown out of Crowley's Abbey and separated from her husband. She was the principle witness in the Crowley's libel suit against Nina Hamnett, testifying on behalf of the defence to witnessing the ritual sacrifice of a cat during one of Crowley's ceremonies.

The inscription and letter are addressed to Olga or "Oggie", possibly the food-writer Olga Hartley.

The interesting quotation from Jesse Collings's Land Reform concerns the ownership of air and the potential hazards of air travel, "...if the discoveries of science should make aerial travel practicable - as some say they will - then owners could legally charge a toll for every aerial machine passing over their land...".The loosely-inserted postcards (2 actual photographs) show "Mr.Hatten Turner preparing for Flight with Mr.Salmet Nov.22 1913", "Mr. Hatten Turner with Mr.Salmet in Flying Machine..." and "H.Salmet on his 50 H.P. Bleriot Monoplane...". Henri Salmet was an early French aviator who, in 1912 & 1913, was sponsored by The Daily Mail to tour Britain and take up passengers on short flights. Christopher H.Turnor (1873-1940), author, architect and agricultural reformer.
