Crayon, aquarelle, blanc de céruse sur carton à vue ovale. 21 x 16,5 cm. Signé en bas à gauche : « d’après Zichy - N. Bogdanoff ». Encadré sous verre. Mihály Zichy exécuta une série de 16 portraits des chefs et commandants du Régiment des Hussards de la Garde en 1868, date du cinquantenaire de l’Empereur Alexandre II, chef honoraire du régiment. Notre portrait est une belle copie par Nicolas Grigoriévitch Bogdanoff, peintre de talent, de l’original de Zichy qui se trouve actuellement dans le Musée national de l’Ermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg. В 1868 году, по случаю 50-летия императора Александра II Михай Зичи получил заказ на серию портретов командиров Лейб-гвардии Гусарского полка (шефом которого являлся сам император). Всего художником для этой серии было выполнено 16 акварельных портретов; в том числе и портрет командира полка в 1843-48 гг. барона А.Е.Энгельгардта. Все рисунки этой серии в настоящее время хранятся в фондах Государственного Эрмитажа. Наш портрет – копия, исполненная в натуральную величину, – по мастерству исполнения ничем не уступает оригиналу Зичи. [ВИНЬОЛА, Джакомо да (1507-1573). Правила о пяти чинах архитектуры.] Повелением Великаго Государя Царя, и Великаго князя Петра Алексиевича самодержца всероссиискаго. Грыдорована и печатана сия Архитектурная книга в Москве. [М.], Сент. 1712. - 12 с., [16] л., 1 л. фронт. (портр.), 100 л. черт. (из 101) ; 8о (15,3 см). - Размер гравюр: 120/138 x 75/93 мм. - Фронтиспис: гравирован. на меди портрет Виньолы, украшенный архитектурными принадлежностями, вверху двуглавый орел с андреевским крестом на груди, внизу заглавие: «Правило о пяти чинех архитектуры Якова Бароция Девигнола » (без подписи гравёра, скорее всего А.Ф. Зубов (1682-после 1741) – как и для 1-го изд.). – Гравюры на меди И.Ф. Зубова (1667 - после 1744), Г.П. Тепчегорского, Д. Шамшурова, П. Пикарта. 1-е изд. вышло в 1709 г. Как выяснил П.П.Пекарский, приведены картинки не только из Виньолы, но также из изданий француза Веллана (гравюры №№59, 72 и 73). Первые 26 л. пронумерованы от руки (орешковые чернила). На верхнем поле стр.3 запись орешковыми чернилами: «Гражданская архитектура », печатка «838», карандашные пометы. На стр. 1 и пояснит. листе к №6 любительские рисунки карандашом; здесь же надпись (орешковые чернила, почерк 18 века): «Нисведущь тому Кто меня незнает и несведущее». На обороте гравюры №101 тем же почерком выписано стихотворение из «Письмовника» Николая Курганова (1725-1790/96) : «Во всю готовит жизнь имение скупой, /И веселится, лишь пожиток числя свой: /Не тратит ничего, по смерть живет убого, /Чтоб только при конце сказать: осталось много». И далее: «Под Сим Стишком разуметь должно Самого Себя» (экземпляр, принадлежавший самому Н.Курганову?). Еще ниже приписка: «Принято в Сочельник(?) 15го генваря» и перевернутая запись: «Ескуляпий». Отсутствуют титульный лист и гравюра №89. Несброшюрованный экземпляр, без переплета. Ничтожные надрывчики по полю листов, разводы от влаги. Оттиск гравюр очень хороший. Трактат итальянского архитектора Джакомо Бароцци да Виньола «Правило пяти ордеров архитектуры» заслужил репутацию одного из лучших практических пособий по трактуемой теме. Поэтому неудивительно, что Петр I придавал такое важное значение изданию трактата на русском языке, самолично читал корректурные экземпляры, давал распоряжения об устройстве типографии – и это в самый разгар беспорядков в Москве в 1709 году. В работе над переводом трактата принимал участие и архитектор Фонтана (построивший Меньшиковский дворец в Санкт-Петербурге). Читая эту книгу, понимаешь, как непросто складывался русский литературный язык новой эпохи, какими еще «сырыми », необработанными попадали в эту книгу непривычные для нашего языка иноземные термины. Представленное у нас 2-ое издание «Правил » отличается большей стилистической и художественной выверенностью и стройностью, нежели спешно готовившееся 1-ое издание. «Большая редкость » (Ю.Битовт). GRACE W. G.: (1848-1915) English Cricketer. Vintage signed 17.5 x 22 photogravure by artist Archibald Stuart-Wortley, the image depicting Grace standing in a full length pose, with his cricket bat slightly raised, at the crease at Lord's Ground. Grace wears his MCC cap and the old tennis court can be seen in the background. Printed in Berlin and published by Messrs. Manson, Swann and Morgan of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1st May 1891. Signed by Grace in pencil with his name alone to the lower border and also signed in pencil by the artist A. Stuart Wortley (his signature extremely weak and barely visible) alongside a remarque of a cricket ball. Some extensive overall age wear and scuffing to the image and with evidence of previous tears (professionally repaired to the verso). Grace's signature is a touch light, although perfectly legible. FR Archibald Stuart-Wortley (1849-1905) Portrait Painter, a pupil of Millais. The present photogravure was reproduced in a limited edition of 200 from a large oil painting by Stuart-Wortley which was commissioned by the MCC in 1888-90 and funded by subscriptions.

BOWIE DAVID: (1947- ) English Musician and Actor. A good signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Bowie standing in a three quarter length pose in a Pierrot costume. The RCA Records publicity portrait has been signed by Bowie in bold black ink across a light area of the image, 'For Jules, with thanks, Bowie' and dated 1980 in his hand. Matted in black and pale mottled grey and framed and glazed in a silver colour frame (slight damage) to an overall size of 15 x 17. VG Bowie appeared in the Pierrot costume for the video of his song Ashes to Ashes (1980) which reached Number 1 in the United Kingdom. The song appears as one of the tracks on his Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, which was also a Number 1 hit.

METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE: A good, original silk programme for a Gala Performance of Grand Opera at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 25th February 1902, in honour of the visit of Prince Henry of Prussia. The programme features performances from Lohengrin, Carmen, Aida, La Traviata and others, the cast including Edouard de Reszke, Emma Calve, Emma Eames, Johanna Gadski, Ernestine Shumann-Heink etc. The silk programme, with a decorative printed design and oval portrait of Prince Henry at the head, has a tasselled edge and was printed by Dempsey & Carroll of New York. KNIGHT LAURA: (1877-1970) English Impressionist Artist. Illustrated A.L.S., Laura, one page, 4to, St. Johns Wood, London, 5th March 1966, to 'My dear Stanley'. Knight announces 'After re-reading your beautiful letter....this huge piece of paper gives me fits' and continues 'I have to scribble an image (not a portrait) but an inadequate expression of my delight. Words fail me - to do justice to your own is impossible. I have just spent several weeks trying to paint an impossible picture out of my head - about nothing. I live in the hope that it means something to someone else, but doubt it. Anyway it's good fun to try to do something you can't do....' Knight has illustrated her letter with an original pen and ink drawing of a ballerina in a full length pose, the image taking up around half the page. A couple of extremely light, minor stains, otherwise VG

BRUNEL ISAMBARD KINGDOM: (1806-1859) British Engineer. A very fine vintage signed 18 x 22.5 engraving, the image by Henry Cousins after a painting by John Callcott Horsley, depicting Brunel seated in a three quarter length pose at his desk, holding a pen in his hands. Several papers and letters fill the desk top before him. Signed ('I K Brunel') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower border which also bears a small circular blindstamp. Neatly mounted to a contemporary canvas backing and with wooden stretchers to the verso. Signed images of Brunel are of the utmost rarity and this large, attractive example is particularly desirable. Some very minor, light age toning to the edges and just a few very insignificant surface marks to the background of the image, VG John Callcott Horsley (1817-1903) English Painter and Illustrator, designer of the first Christmas card. Brunel had married Horsley's sister, Mary Elizabeth, in 1836. The oil painting from which the present engraving was made is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London, and was painted by Horsley in 1857. It was presented to the Gallery by Brunel's son in 1895. American Book Prices Current have no records relating to signed images of Brunel ever having appeared at auction.

DARWIN CHARLES: (1809-1882) English Naturalist. A.L.S., C. Darwin, one page, oblong 8vo (the corners neatly roundly trimmed), Down, Bromley, Kent, 9th September n.y. (1860), to a gentleman. Darwin writes, in full, ‘If you can get from Trubner the “Atlantic Monthly” for last August, please send me a copy & post here; but it is not worth sending to America for. Please order for me two copies of the Atlantic Monthly for next October & send here.’ Professionally lightly mounted on black and matted in burgundy cloth alongside a vintage printed engraved portrait of Darwin removed from a book and framed and glazed in a decorative frame to an overall size of 21 x 13. Some light overall age wear and a minor tear to the upper right corner, professionally repaired, and only just touching one letter of Darwin’s address. G The Atlantic Monthly (now known as The Atlantic) was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1857, as a literary and cultural commentary magazine. A letter by Darwin dated the following day to the present letter, 10th September 1860, and written to the American Botanist Asa Gray (1810-1888) is published in the Darwin Correspondence Project. In the letter Darwin refers to Gray’s articles in The Atlantic Monthly and states that he has ordered several copies, as illustrated in the present letter, with a view to getting them reprinted in an English Journal.

ISSA SHOJAEI, PORTRAIT ACRYLIC ON PAPER 26" X 18": Born in 1955 in Azerbaijan, Issa Shojaei was educated at the Tehran Institute of Fine Art from 1977 to 1981. He continued his studies at the Mensch Und Raum Institutes in Bochum, as well as in Cologne, Germany from 1984 to 1987.
