J.F. Start Price: EUR 60 Zustand: (1-2/-)Reproduction of J.F. Michiels "Album von Köln"29.5 x 38.5 cm, faithful reproduction of J.F. Michiels’ celebrated images of Cologne cathedral, from a limited edition of 750 numbered copies for the 750th anniversary of the cathedral in 1983, produced using a patented Swiss screenless color printing process. - Note: The first architectural photographs in Germany were taken in 1853 by J.F. Michiels (1823-1887) and are regarded by historians as important masterpieces of photographic history. No photographer provided a more impressive portrait of the cathedral under construction than Michiels did with his first photograph taken on 29 June 1853. Only eight of these rare original photographs are thought to have survived in individual collections and these are rarely exhibited as continuous exposure to light would damage them. Start Price: EUR 60 Condition: (1-2/-)

British School (17th Century) Portrait of a clergyman, bust length, in a skull cap and gownOil on canvas, 74.5cm by 61.5cmStiff reline of some age, cleaned and revarnished. Now with a layer of dirt and thoroughly discoloured varnish. Paint surface has been flattened and abraded by the restoration process. The canvas weave is apparent. Fairly pronounced stretcher shadow. Frame rubbing to edges. Relatively finely spaced stable craquelure throughout. Canvas is uneven and appears to bulge and the four corners. An area of repaired damage is visible towards the upper right hand corner. Small square wax patch repair to reverse, just below central stretcher. The thick varnish has occluded most signs of restoration under UV, however a later course of restoration is visible. There is a notable patch of restoration just above the sitters head as well as several smaller patches of restoration through the sitters face and clothing. Overall in a fairly rough state of preservation.

PALE CELADON JADE 'MOTH AND SPANISH COIN' PAPERWEIGHT QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY 清 青白玉雕飛蛾及西班牙銀元圖鎮紙 of near square form, the dome top carved in relief with a large moth spreading its wings, the flat reverse carved with one side of a Spanish coin, including a laureate and armoured bust of King Charles III of Spain, encircled by characters reading 'CAROLUS·III·DEI·GRATIA·1786', the stone of even pale celadon colour Dimensions:4.3cm wide Note: Note: It is extremely unusual to have Chinese jade carved with foreign currency, in this case a Spanish currency with a portrait of King Charles III of Spain (r. 1759-1788), which reflects the wide spread of Spanish coins in Qing China. During most of the Qing dynasty, period silver circulated in China in two forms, that of silver sycees and foreign silver dollars, primarily Spanish dollars from Spanish Philippines. Silver was used more in interregional trade and was more often used to pay for large transactions, furthermore it wasn't counted by denomination but by weight.Under the reign of King Charles III, the design was changed as the Spanish coat-of-arms were superseded by his portrait. The Chinese referred to the Latin numeral "I" as "工" causing the silver coins of Charles III to be known as Sangong (三工). Additionally, the depiction of the reigning Spanish monarch inspired the Chinese people to refer to these Carolus dollars as Fotou Yang (佛頭洋, "Buddha-head dollar").

Jacek Malczewski (Polish, 1854-1929)Self Portrait Sketch signed and dated 'J. Malczewski is credited for the rise in popularity of symbolism in late 19th- and early 20th-century Poland. Through his use of symbolic motifs and allegories, Malczewski provided a lens to the political turmoil that he experienced leading up to and following Poland's 1863 uprising. This event became a persistent theme in his works, in which he expressed ideas of independence and nationalism. Malczewski was fond of self-portraits and often used his own likeness as reference for allegorical figures. This is especially true in his later works such as in his series My Life (1914-1920).Along with his wife, Maria, Jewish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski was an avid collector of Polish art and amassed an impressive collection of works from some of Poland's most influential artists.
