Early in the second half Thomson and a Rangers player, Sam English, went for the ball at the same time. Thomson's head collided with English's knee, fracturing his skull and rupturing an artery in his right temple. Thomson was taken off the field in a stretcher; most people assumed that he was just badly concussed, but after an unsuccessful operation, he died later that evening. A 4 page card was issued as a Tribute from William Maley including a poem, a portrait and his honours. Good

Sir John Watson Gordon R.A. (British, 1788-1864)Portrait of Rev. Alexander Carlyle (1722 - 1805) bears inscription (verso)oil on canvas76.2 x 63.5 cm. (30 x 25 in.)Footnotes:Carlyle was a quintessential figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. For over fifty years he was the minister at Inveresk, but he was also an active participant in the intellectual life in Edinburgh. He counted David Hume and Adam Smith as friends and was an early member of the city's debating club, the Select Society. In his youth, Carlyle had a commanding physical presence, tall and handsome. Sir Walter Scott called him 'the grandest demigod I ever saw'. His autobiography, published long after his death, is considered one of the best memoirs of the period.A similar portrait of him by Archibald Skirving is in the National Galleries of Scotland Collection. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Samuel John Peploe RSA (British, 1871-1935)The red scarf, portrait of Jeannie Blyth signed 'Peploe' (lower right)oil on canvas41.5 x 34 cm. (16 5/16 x 13 3/8 in.)Painted in c.1902Footnotes:ProvenanceSale; Christie's, Glasgow, 8 December 1988, Lot 318Jeannie Blyth was a teenage Romany flower seller who sold blooms at the top of the Waverley Steps and caught the eye of one of Scotland's most celebrated artists.According to Stanley Cursiter, 'Jeannie Blyth was a wonderful model, her dark hair and rich colour and complete lack of self-consciousness allowed Peploe to paint many pictures, and these smiling or laughing heads are among the finest of his early works.' (S. Cursiter, Peploe: An intimate memoir of an artist and his work, Thomas Nelson, London, 1947, p.8).There are several known depictions of Jeannie by Peploe, such as The Green Blouse (National Galleries of Scotland) and Jeannie Blyth (Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums), but the present painting arguably portrays her at her most beautiful. Peploe uses the red scarf to enhance the rosy tones in her cheeks and parted scarlet lips. But she is not just a pretty face. With her wistful gaze and ever so slightly raised chin, Peploe captures a strength of character and makes sure that we the viewer are aware that she is a confident woman. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
