Frederick Wagner (Pennsylvania, 1864 - 1940) Oil on canvas portrait of a woman. Signed lower left. Old gallery label on frame verso. Sight size: 42 x 34 in. Overall Size: 49.75 x 41.75 in. Provenance: Private Florida Collection. Wagner was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy over 35 times from 1906-1940, winning prizes in 1914 and 1922. Wagner exhibited at the Carnegie 14 times from 1898 - 1925. He showed two works at the Armory Show, and exhibited 11 times at the Corcoran between 1907 - 1935. He had a special exhibit of 100 pastels, at the Corcoran in April 1924. Wagner exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1884, 1907, 1925 and 1928.
Louis Ritman (1889 - 1963) Portrait, "Head Study" Initialed lower right. Label verso. Sight Size: 17.75 x 14 in. Overall Size: 25 x 21.5 in. Ritman estate stamp verso Oil on board. Known primarily for his sunny, Impressionist landscape paintings, often with figures, Louis Ritman earned much of his reputation for the work he produced during the time he was in Giverny, France, home of Claude Monet, a key Impressionist. Born in Kamenets-Podolsky, Russia, he emigrated with his family to Chicago in 1903, and first travelled from his home in Chicago to Paris in 1910 when he could afford the art training there that so many American artists felt was crucial to professional achievement. He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian, but the turning point in his career was meeting Impressionist Frederick Frieseke at a cafe in Paris. A collection of late 19th century snuff boxes, to include; a Scottish white metal mounted horn snuff mull, of typical curved form, having white metal mounted hinged lid with oval cartouche (left blank) and monopaedic support attached to collar, height 7.3cm, together with a brass mounted mussel shell snuff box, of naturalistic form, having mottled polished mother of pearl finish with hinged ovoid lid, length 6.5cm, and a continental papier mache snuff box, of rectangular form, the hinged lid painted with a comical portrait of a lady on horseback. A WW1 German prisoner of war wooden handle rattle, an African bushmans shell and bead work pouch, a late 19th century Japanese ivory circular lobed dish and cover, the inner bowl carved with a quail, two mother of pearl shells (largest 21 cm wide), a wax circular medallion depicting portrait in profile of Nicolaus Copernicus, a similar plaster medallion, a miniature ivory chess set, (part), various fossils to include serpentine, conulus albogalerus and other items.
