§ Angus McBean (British, 1994-1990) Black-and-white fashion photographs for Vogue magazine, 1980s photographs (11) 26 x 20cm (10 x 8in) Angus McBean was born in Monmouthshire, South Wales, in 1904. After moving to West Acton, London, in 1925 and working at Liberty’s department store, he began his career as a theatre mask-maker and scenery designer. Upon leaving Liberty’s he decided to grow an impressive beard, symbolic of the fact he was no longer, and would never again be, a ‘wage-slave’. His photographic career started with pictures of theatrical performances, later moving onto portraits of dance and theatre personalities. He developed his distinct tenebristic style of hard lenses, harsh lighting and imposing shadows. After learning the technical aspects of photography during his apprenticeship under Hugh Cecil, he set up his own studio on Belgrave Road in c.1934. In 1936, he attended the Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries which was perhaps the biggest influence on his career, twinning the skill of a master photographer with the surrealist characteristics of fantasy, drama and humour. This style revolutionised portraiture in the 1930s and as a result, McBean is one of the biggest influences on theatrical, portrait, creative and commercial photography in the last century. During the Second World War, McBean moved away from London to Bath as he could no longer justify photographing ‘pretty girls’ with the destruction happening around him during the Blitz. After the war, he returned to London where he would successfully resume his career, becoming the official photographer at Stratford, The Royal Opera House, Sadlers Wells and the Old Vic. McBean’s work focussed on the beauty and glamour of celebrities and west-end stars rather than showing a ‘deeper meaning’ behind the façade. His iconic portrait of Audrey Hepburn is perhaps his most recognisable work worldwide - but the list of names he has worked with is extremely extensive, including the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Tilda Swinton, Agatha Christie, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and many more. In 1966 he retired from full-time work, but he continued with his self-portrait Christmas cards that ran from 1936 until 1989. All unframed and fine - unsigned.

The musical ensembles with which he was associated included the Ballets Russes, the Huddersfield Choral Society, the Royal Choral Society, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, the London Philharmonic, Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. Unframed and condition appears fine.
§ Angus McBean (British, 1904-1990) Portrait study of Carl Ebert, Creator and Artistic Director of Glyndebourne signed lower left "Angus McBean / London '50" and published in "Tatler", 1950 a vintage print 56 x 45cm (22 x 18in) The present photograph was taken in the stalls at Glyndebourne during a rehearsal of "Ariadne and Naxos" . § Frank Auerbach (British, b.1931) Reclining Head of Julia signed and dated lower right "Auerbach '07", and numbered 118/150, published by Marlborough Fine Art, London etching printed with tone on Somerset white paper 20 x 24cm (8 x 9in) Provenance: Marlborough Fine Art, London Other Notes: The artist's wife, Julia Auerbach, has been a regular weekly sitter for the artist over a long period. Since her appearance in the first set of etched portrait heads in 1989, she has appeared as a subject in numerous prints. Julia was the main subject of study in Auerbach's etchings in the years 1998-2001, when she was usually drawn in the reclining pose that she adopted to save getting too tired. In some of the prints she is asleep. Condition is fine.
§ Clifford Hall, RBA, ROI (British, 1904-1973) Portrait of Reginald Reynolds (1905-1958), 1943, oil on canvas 56 x 46cm (22 x 18in) Provenance: The Walden School, Saffron Walden, EssexReginald Reynolds went to the Friends' School in Saffron Walden followed by a period of time travelling through India with Mahatma Gandhi. Upon his return to England he supported the anti-fascist movement during the Spanish Civil War and as a conscientious objector during the Second World War he worked for the Chelsea Civil Defence as an ambulance driver and handled tracker dogs searching for victims of bombing. He studied and wrote on John Woolman, an 18th Century American Quaker and advocate against slavery. He spent the remainder of his life working for peace and racial equality. He regularly returned to the Friends' School and was a great support to the pupils. The Friends at Kingston Monthly Meeting wrote of him at his death in 1958: " ... good intentions are not enough ... What is rare is to find a person who cared sufficiently to put intentions into effect. Reginald Reynolds did just that".Unsigned. Perhaps a little surface dirt.We are grateful to the artist's son for dating the present painting.
