JAMES TORRANCE AS (Scottish 1859-1916) THE DAY DREAMER oil on canvas, inscribed verso original gilt frame 25cm x 20cm Note : An extremely rare example of the work of James Torrance. Only two previous works by Torrance are recorded at auction in the last 20 years-"Honesty" sold by Christie`s Glasgow 20th April 1995 lot 975 selling for £5500 and "The Blue Pidgeon" sold by Sotheby`s 15th April 2002 lot 47 for £1600 (both hammer prices).-source www.artinfo.com .The sitter for "The Day Dreamer" is believed to be Torrance`s daughter who also sat for "The Blue Pidgeon". James Torrance was born in Glasgow and worked in London for many years as a highly successful portrait painter and illustrator. His work includes illustrations for `Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales` edited by Sir George Douglas (1893). On his return to Scotland he married the flower painter Louise Ellen Perman (tutor of James Stuart Park) and they lived in Helensburgh. The James Torrance Memorial Award is presented each year by the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI)
JAMES PATERSON RSA PRSW RWS (1854-1932) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Pastel, chalk and pencil, signed and dated 1918 Original frame and mount with Aitken Dott label verso 36cm x 26cm Note : After settling in Edinburgh, James Paterson drew several accomplished portrait sketches of high-profile contemporaries including a self-portrait drawing (1916) in pastel, chalk and pencil which is now in the collection of The National Galleries Of Scotland. The portrait offered here is an outstanding example of his characteristic style as a draughtsman. Paterson has used hatching in red and grey chalk to model the face and give it depth.James Paterson`s work was exhibited at The Kelvingrove Gallery as part of the major "Glasgow Boys" Exhibition (2010) and at The Hunterian Art Gallery (Glasgow) in "James Paterson : Works From The Artists Studio" (2010)-an exhibition dedicated entirely to his own work.

EDWIN HAYES RI (British 1819-1904) SUDDEN SQUAWL oil on canvas, signed and dated 23cm x 32cm Note : : Hayes, 2 Claylands Road, Kennington, London verso. Hayes was born in Bristol, England but brought up in in Dublin, Ireland where his father was a hotelier. He studied art at the Dublin Society Art School and first exhibited his work at the RHA (Royal Hibernian Academy) in 1842. He remained in Dublin for ten years before moving to London. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, British Institution, Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, becoming a full member of the latter in 1863. Hayes painted seascapes in Ireland, England, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain and Italy, his work inevitably featuring ships and boats in high seas,[2] harbour scenes[3] or other aspects of the coastline. His son Claude Hayes, R.I., ROI, (1852-1922) was also a notable landscape and portrait painter.
