Winston McQuoid (British, b.1909, exh.1936) Landscape with Water oil on board 32 x 60cm Provenance: Jim Ede, Kettles Yard, Cambridge, 1964 John Blackburn Acquired by gift from the estate of Dr. P. Crawford Winston McQuoid was born in Glasgow. He attended art schools in Belfast, Nantwich and London. His first solo show was held in Belfast in 1924, when he was only 14. A well-known portrait artist from the 1930s (his sitters included Osbert Sitwell, Lady Cunard and Sir Edward Marsh) he developed a lifelong admiration for the oils of John Constable. In 1969 he moved to Ireland.

An English Porcelain Commemorative Jug of Queen Caroline Association, circa 1820, of squat pedestal form, with moulded satyr mask, each side with raised profile bust portrait of a gentleman within roses and thistle frames, the rim inscribed "Mr T Denman Mr Brougham", mainly in pink, green and black enamels, 12cm high See illustration Thomas Denman, 1st Baron (1779-1854) was an English Judge born in London of a well-known physician, 23rd July 1779. In 1806 he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, and entered practice. He distinguished himself by his eloquent defence of the Luddites (women, especially in Northern industries tended to sympathise with Queen Caroline's situation as a symbol of their own plight), but perhaps his most remarkable appearance was as one of the Counsel for Queen Caroline. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux. He was born 19th September 1778 in Edinburgh. He went to Edinburgh University to study science and maths, but in 1800 he changed the direction of his studies and joined the law school. In 1802 he founded the Edinburgh Review, a Whig periodical, which became one of the most influential political publications of the century. After moving to London 1803 he became friends with a group of radical thinkers, including Lord Byron and Charles Lamb. In his early political work in his books he attacked the slave trade and became associated with the left wing of the Whig party. Brougham also served as legal adviser to Princess Caroline, whom he and Thomas Denman successfully defended in the annulment action, initiated by King George IV 1820.
A Miniature Portrait Painted Porcelain Plaque depicting Agnes Wheler aged 16, William Corden, 1822, the oblong plaque depicting the young woman half length, her brown hair in Grecian style, grey-blue eyes and wearing a lace edged white satin puff sleeved dress with lilac sash, a column in the shadowy foreground, 14cm by 12cm, the reverse of the plaque with scription "Agnes Wheler Aged 16 years Painted by Wm Corden 1822", in an oak frame, the back panel with extensive ink inscription "Portrait of Agnes Wheeler at the age of sixteen. Painted by William Corden in 1822. Given to me by my aunt H Maria Fitzherbert, 14 August 1899. The frame was made by John Williams, a carpenter employed in repairing the house from a piece of old oak part of one of the house timbers at Somersal supposed to have originally formed part of the old hall at Cubley (signed W Fitzherbert). Somersal.Herbert 29 Aug 1899" See illustrations Somersal Hall, Somersal Herbert in Derbyshire. The house was built in 1564 for John Fitzherbert and incorporates an older Great Hall from circa 1500. Later additions were made in 1712 and 1750. A porch was added in 1899 (and perhaps the frame of this lot is made from timber from that addition?). The Fitzherberts had resided here from the 13th century or earlier and remained in residence until 1803 when, after the sale to Lord Vernon, returned to Fitzherbert ownership under William Fitzherbert (a younger son of the Tissington line). Subsequently Sir Henry Fitzherbert inherited Somersal Hall (as well as Tissington Hall), and he enlarged the former in 1850. William Corden (1797-1867) Derby trained artist, said by Haslam to have worked on the Rockingham Royal service.

A German Painted Porcelain Plaque, after Louise Vigée Le Brun, circa 1870, rectangular, depicting a self portrait of the artist and her daughter, in embrace, half length, wearing classical clothes, indistinct impressed number, inscribed (perhaps later) on the reverse "324 Le Brun et Fille No.14 £6 Le Brun plus child by Wagner", 21.5cm by 14cm, in decorative gilt and gesso frame See illustration Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun was a friend of Marie-Antoinette, and official painter. She was an international celebrity of the Ancien Régime, and a highly successful female professional artist in a period when women were denied any full academic training. The artist outlived Napoleon and the Bourbon Restoration.
An Oval Mourning Locket, the locket enamelled in plain black to both sides, and on the bale, it opens to reveal two tinted photographic portrait miniatures, above each picture an enamelled panel says "GEORGE THOMAS AGED 8 YEARS", and "HENRY GRIFFITHS THOMAS AGED 4 YEARS", and below each a woven hair locket, measures 7.6cm by 4.9cm.
