(qty). *** Haberdasher to the Royal Family. “My aunt`s [Lily Clarke`s] long connection with the Royal Family began one morning in the 1920s when a young Duchess of York walked into a small haberdashery shop Smith and Co. at 205 Sloane Street in Knightsbridge London. The shop was to become Hayfords and was eventually taken over by Debenhams when Lily Clarke retired in 1957. My aunt was the manageress and the Duchess [of York] had come in to order some underwear. Evidently she took to my aunt for she placed an order for the layette for the child she was expecting. From then on with her workroom assistants and with the help of her very good tailor my aunt eventually designed and made up the clothes for both the royal children. In a sense the Royal Family became her life. A young widow with one son to support she enjoyed the trips out to Windsor when a car would be sent to fetch her for fittings and discussions sometimes accompanied by her tailor. She was invited to christenings funerals and pantomimes which were performed at the castle [Windsor Castle] featuring the princesses in key roles. Their dresses for the Coronation of King George VI were designed and made by my aunt and they were for some time exhibited in the Museum of London. She was invited to the wedding of Elizabeth and Philip and to the Coronation of Princess Elizabeth in 1953. Every year she was sent signed christmas cards and she responded often sending small gifts of clothes or accessories to the Queen Mother and subsequently the Queen.” - Elizabeth Moore. Notes on her aunt Lily Clarke. Elizabeth Moore (1919-2009) “Elizabeth Berridge”; novelist.
