Henry VIII First coinage (1509-1526) AR halfgroat, Canterbury issue of Archbishop William Warham, bearing his uncertain mark (of 1526-32) on obverse and pomegranate (1509-26) on reverse. NVF (v slightly creased, cruder portrait). Plate 6 Note: William Warham was Archbishop of Canterbury from November 1503 until August 1532, and Lord Chancellor until 1515 when, upon his resignation, his post was taken by Thomas Wolsey. In 1527 Warham assisted Wolsey in an inquiry regarding the validity of Catherine of Aragon’s marriage to Henry.
Charles I (1625-executed 1649), AR Half Pound, Oxford Mint, 1642. Obverse: King on horseback, trampling on arms, with legend; reverse: three Oxford plumes, “X” value, declaration “Relig: Prot. Leg.Ang. Liber.Par” with date 1642 below. The legends mostly VF, equestrian portrait Fine. A desirable piece Plate 1. Note: Declaration “Relig(io) Prot(estantium) Leg(es) Ang(liae) Liber(tas) Par(liamenti)” was made by Charles I at Wellington, Shropshire when, on 19th September 1642, he promised to uphold the Religion of the Protestants, the laws of England and the liberty of Parliament. Just over 1 month later, on Sunday October 23rd, the king’s army fought the Earl of Essex’s Parliamentary army at Edgehill, the English Civil War had begun.
Admiral Vernon: 2 AE medallions commemorating the taking of Portobello. The first: obverse half length portrait of Vernon, legend “The.British.glory.revivd. by. Admiral.Verno (sic)”; reverse: view of the action with legend “He.took.Porto.Bello. with. six. ships.only” and in exergue “By.courage.and.conduct”, diameter 37mm; a good VF. The second, smaller, obverse Vernon accepting the kneeling Don Blasse’s sword of surrender with legend “The Spanish Pride Pulled Down by Admiral Vernon”, reverse similar to first but with date in exergue; diameter 27mm. Naval Review at Spithead 1889, a fine bronze medallion, obverse fleet in review order, above which an oval panel bearing portrait of Victoria; reverse bust of Emperor Wilhelm left, with legend “The German Emperor Wilhelm II visits England August 1889”, by L.C. Lauer, diameter 60mm. EF, with a “chocolate” brown finish and contained in its circular card case. Plate 3
A nineteenth century Continental gilt bronze crucifix with engraving and enamel stringing. Decorated with an ovoid KPM style porcelain plaque with the portrait of Christ wearing a crown of thorns, 21.5cm. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Porcelain good. Minimal loss to the enamel and with some tarnishing to the gilding. Lower terminal slightly bent.
