English School (late 16th/early 17th century), oil on panel, portrait of a lady wearing a hat and holding an ostrich feather fan. 115 cm x 75.5 cm (see illustration). Possibly painted by George Gower (1540-1596) or Robert Peake (1551-1619). PROVENANCE - This painting was found in the attic of Harts House, Gloucester Road, Almondsbury, Near Bristol, in 1949 by Cyril Quantick when he purchased the seven bedroom manor house which dates from the 16th century. The painting has remained in the same family since that date. CONDITION REPORT: This painting is in extremely good order having recently been cleaned. UV light shows very little in the way of blemishes. The face is in generally good order with minor marks to the forehead and to the right hand side of the right hand facing eye. There is more significant blemishing below the nose and beneath the bottom lip and around the chin. The ruff is in generally good condition with only minor marking to the right hand side of the panel join. The hands are in generally good order. The right had cuff has a small blemish however the remainder of the costume is in generally good order and we can see very little evidence of any further marks on the surround. There is a visible panel join running to the right hand side of the face down through the costume and through the fingers of her left hand. UV light makes this join appear more significant than it is in the flesh.

Sir Peter Lely and Studio (1618-1680), oil painting on canvas, Duchess of Portsmouth. 124 cm x 99 cm (see illustration). Lely was born Pieter Van der Faes to Dutch parents in Westphalia. He arrived in London circa 1641 and succeeded Anthony Van Dyck as the most fashionable portrait artist in England. He was portrait artist to Charles I. His career was not interrupted by Charles' execution and he served Oliver Cromwell and also Charles II after The Restoration in 1660. The Duchess Portsmouth was born Louise Renee de Penancoet de Kerouaille (1649-1734). She was placed in the household of Henrietta Anne Stuart the Duchess of Orleans sister of Charles II and sister in law of Louis XIV of France. In 1670 she accompanied the Duchess on a visit to Charles II at Dover. The King appointed her a lady in waiting to his own Queen Catherine of Braganza. She became Charles II's mistress. The titles of Baroness Petersfield, Countess of Fareham and Duchess of Portsmouth were granted to her in 1673. After the Kings death she quickly fell from favour and retired to France and died aged 85. CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. All of the paintings are well presented and any restoration work will have been undertaken at this time. We have provided reports on an individual basis. This painting is in extremely good condition and could be hung as is without the need for any restoration work. UV light reveals some overpainting. The face has a blemish under each eye and on the bridge of the nose. The hands and arms are untouched. The restoration is minimal.

There are a few small marks to the face and neck. There are several small marks to the dress. The hands are practically unblemished. The area surrounding the sitter has minor blemishes but no significant issues.

John Hoppner RA (1758-1810), oil painting on canvas, Miss Cecilia Temple circa 1790, seated three quarter length wearing white dress and blue sash with landscape beyond. 127 cm x 102 cm, framed (see illustration). John Hoppner was an English portrait painter born in Whitechapel. His father was of German extraction and his mother was one of the German attendants at the Royal Palace. Hoppner received the patronage of George III. In 1775 he became a student at the Royal Academy and in 1778 took a silver medal for drawing from life and in 1782 The Academy's highest award The Gold Medal for Historical Painting. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1780. He preferred landscapes but turned to portrait painting which was more lucrative. He had many fashionable and wealthy sitters and was the greatest rival of Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. All of the paintings are well presented and any restoration work will have been undertaken at this time. We have provided reports on an individual basis. This painting could be hung in its present condition without the need for any restoration. UV light reveals that the painting has suffered from significant craquelure. This is evident on the body of the dress in the main. There are some blemishes to the face on the forehead, bridge of the nose and underneath the right eye. There has been restoration and overpainting beneath the nose and across the top lip. There are other small areas of restoration in the landscape.

Joseph Highmore (1692-1780), oil on canvas, Duchess of Argyll 1743 (or possibly 1748), three quarter length in oyster satin dress trimmed with blue ribbons and in wooded landscape. 127 cm x 102 cm (see illustration). Highmore was one of the best portrait painters in the reign of George II. He studied for ten years at Sir Godfrey Kneller's Academy. This portrait is probably Elizabeth Gunning (1733-1790) a famous Irish beauty who married James Sixth Duke of Hamilton in 1752. In 1759 she married John Campbell Fifth Duke of Argyll from 1770-1806. CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. There are blemishes at the bottom edge of the waistcoat and around the edges of the portrait surround by no significant issues. Craquelure is more evident under UV light than in the flesh.

18th century French School, oil on canvas, oval portrait Francisco Julian Fleming, half length wearing blue coat and reading a letter. 79 cm x 66 cm, framed (see illustration). Francisco Julian Fleming was born in Cadiz in 1749 the son of Robert Fleming and Margarita Ricarda Geynan Wadding. He married Margarita Maria Fallon Gante in 1774 in Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz. He died in La Orotava, Santa Cruz, Tenerife in 1828. CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. All of the paintings are well presented and any restoration work will have been undertaken at this time. We have provided reports on an individual basis. This picture is in generally good order and could be hung in its present state without the need for any repair or restoration. UV light reveals very little. The face is generally unblemished with only very minor marks. The same applies to the costume and hands. The surround is also in good order with only very minor blemishes.

Simon-Bernard Lenoir (1729-1791), oil painting on canvas, portrait of a young girl in pink dress and choker. 56 cm x 41 cm, signed and dated 1756 (see illustration). Simon-Bernard Lenoir was a medallist at The Academie Royale four times between 1749 and 1758. He produced portraits in both oil and pastel many of which were exhibited at The Salons de L'Academie de Saint-Luc between 1760 and 1774. Mrs Jarratt daughter of Charles Berners whose "seat" is on the South Bank of the River Orwell in the County of Suffolk approximately five miles from Ispwich and eight from Harwich. Attributed to Charles Baxter (1809-1879), oil on canvas, portrait of three women in period costume. 60 cm x 50 cm, framed (see illustration). Charles Baxter was best known as a painter of fancy portraits of charming pretty girls in the keepsake tradition. He exhibited regularly at the Suffolk Street Gallery and The Royal Academy between 1839 and 1872. He was elected to the Society of British Artists in 1842. The right hand facing sitter has some discolouration to the clothing and around the front facing hand. There are some marks also to the bonnet of the same sitter.

Mary Beale (1633-1699), oil on canvas, portrait of a clergyman thought to be the young John Tillotson later Archbishop of Canterbury from 1691 to 1694. 75 cm x 61 cm (see illustration). Mary Beale became one of the most important portrait painters in the 17th century and has been described as the first professional female English painter. Born in Barrow, Suffolk, the daughter of John Cradock a Puritan rector and amateur painter. She was acquainted with local artists including Peter Lely. In 1652 she married Charles Beale a cloth merchant in London and amateur painter. She became a semi-professional portrait painter in the 1650's and 1660's working from her home in Covent Garden and later Fleet Street. The family moved to a farmhouse in Allbrook, Hampshire in 1665 due to financial difficulties, her husband having lost his position as a Patent Clerk probably due to the Great Plague of London. For the next five years a 17th century two storey timber framed building was her family home and studio. She returned to London in 1670 and established a studio in Pall Mall with her husband working as her assistant. She died in 1699 in Pall Mall and was buried at St. James', Piccadilly, London. Jonathan Richardson (The Elder 1665-1745), oil painting on canvas, oval portrait of Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745). 69 cm x 50 cm, circa 1730, in gilt frame (see illustration). Sir Robert Walpole was one of the most significant figures in the history of British Government. In 1712 he was expelled from Parliament under spurious charges of corruption as Secretary at War and was committed to The Tower of London where he became regarded as a political martyr. With The Whigs returned to power Walpole became Prime Minister and Chancellor of The Exchequer (1715-1717 and 1721-1742). Jonathan Richardson was the leading native born painter for the first forty years of the 18th century. He was also a writer on art and literary topics and had great influence on Sir Joshua Reynolds desire to become a painter. CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. The face and hair are in generally good order. There is some discolouration to the top centre of the wig, the left and right hand sides of the wig and at the edge of the painting where it joins the oval frame.

Doctor John Williams was a British clergyman and political advisor to King James I. He served as Bishop of Lincoln (1621-1641), Keeper of The Great Seal also known as Lord Chancellor (1621-1625) and Archbishop of York from 1641-1650. He was the last Archbishop to serve as Lord Chancellor.

17th century English School, oil painting on canvas, portrait of Philip Tenison (1612-1661) Archdeacon of Norfolk. 91 cm x 71 cm, framed (see illustration). Philip Tenison was Archdeacon of Norfolk 1660-61. He was baptised at Downham in Cambridgeshire where his father was the rector. He studied at Trinity College Cambridge where he is recorded in 1631. He was Vicar of Barton, Cambridgeshire, from 1637-1641 and then of Weathersfield in Essex in 1642. He married Anne Mileham sister of Sir Thomas Browne's wife Dorothea. In late 1646 an application was made for an order for Doctor Aylett to institute and induct him to The Rectory of Heathersett in Norfolk. He was ejected from this living during the period of Parliamentary Rule. His fortunes changes with The Restoration. He was presented as Archdeacon of Norfolk by The King and installed on 24th August 1660. CONDITION REPORT: All of the portraits in this single owner collection were purchased approximately 25 years ago from reputable picture dealers. These are lots 767 to 783 inclusive. All of the paintings are well presented and any restoration work will have been undertaken at this time. We have provided reports on an individual basis. This picture is in generally good order and could be hung in its current state without the need for any repair or restoration. UV light reveals some blemishes to the face. There is one on the forehead and also to the left hand and bottom side of the left hand facing eye. There is a blemish to the left of the cravat and further small blemishes to the surround.
