Ample margins. Fine, quality printing. Very good to fine condition. Comment(s): This edition authorized and supervised by Doon Arbus. Acording to “Gordon’s Photography Prices” the auction record for a silver print of this image is $583,500 realized at Christie's, New York, 5/17/2017, lot #25B. This is one of Arbus’s most famous pictures and one of her best-known subjects – a ‘Jewish giant’ named Eddie Carmel. Carmel worked in carnival sideshows and as an actor in monster B-movies. Arbus photographed him a number of times and described the family dynamics: "The parents are orthodox and repressive and disapprove of his carnival career … When he stands with his arms around each he looks like he would gladly crush them. They fight terribly in an utterly typical fashion which seems only exaggerated by their tragedy." True to her description, this could be a conventional family portrait, were it not for the apparent look of fear in Mrs. Carmel’s face as she looks up at her son, who stands cramped and bowed by the traditional family sitting room (courtesy National Galleries of Scotland). A wonderful article on this photograph and the relationship between Arbus and The Jewish Giant can be found here: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/13/arts/design/diane-arbus-recorded-a-bronx-familys-unsettling-dynamic.html?_r=0. Indira Flack, photographic portrait of Sir Stirling Moss OBE - 'The greatest driver never to have won the World Championship'the first Chromaluxe of this image produced especially for the inaugural 'Sleeping with Art' event 2021, signed by the artist to the reverse, 762mm x 508mm, ready to hang with caption by Doug Nye and Great British Racing Drivers story behind the picture labels to reverse. Footnotes:Chromaluxe printing uses a process called 'dye sublimation' to fuse images onto metal. The term 'sublimation' describes the transition of a substance (in this case, the special inks) directly from the solid to the gas phase without becoming a liquid first.Moving from Worcestershire to London, Indira Flack worked as a freelance assistant for many leading photographers, where she had the opportunity to learn her craft. Since becoming a freelance photographer, she has photographed a huge variety of people. 'From actors to vicars, artists to Olympians, not to mention 100 plus Great British Racing Drivers.Photography enables me to meet people, go places, experience things I wouldn't normally and all for my job, what could be better than that ?'Great British Racing Drivers' (GBRD) is a unique collection of new photographs celebrating more than 100 of Britain's most iconic and inspirational drivers, past, present and future. From Karting to F1, not all champions but all inspiring in many different ways. Men, women and kids. World Champions, European Champions, British Champions. Knights of the Realm, CBEs, OBEs, MBEs. Dogs, horses and a lightsabre!' GBRD is an on-going project, which began in 2014 with Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees and Sir Jackie Stewart. Indira's travelled 1000s of miles around the UK to capture more than 100 drivers in settings and locations that link to their motorsport story or illustrate their personalities away from the track. 'I love photographing people and it's been an absolute privilege and pleasure to have photographed these legends of motorsport. With new drivers emerging all the time, GBRD has the potential to keep me busy for years ! My aim is to create an archive for motorsport fans and the general public to enjoy. Who knows it might even inspire a future driver or two?'The new £20M Silverstone Interactive Museum opened by Sir Lewis Hamilton and Prince Harry, featured GBRD as its very first visiting exhibition Oct 2019 - Oct 2021, placing it at the very centre of British motorsport. The inspiration came from photographing at Goodwood Festival of Speed surrounded by these legends of motorsport, and a desire to do something different. This is not the only link to the renowned motorsport event. The event's founder and former advertising photographer, The Duke of Richmond, has written the foreword for the exhibition. 'Indira Flack is a very talented photographer. She has a brilliant way of exposing and exploring what really matters to people. What is evident from these stunning pictures is not only the depth of talent that exists in British motorsport, but also, and perhaps uniquely, the pure enthusiasm there is in this country for our sport. It's obvious too, that everyone involved, including the photographer, hugely enjoyed the whole process and being part of this exciting project.'With personal family experience of dementia, GBRD proudly supports Race Against Dementia by donating a percentage of print sales. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
