John Bellany CBE RA HRSA, Scottish 1942-2013 - Self-portrait, 1984; charcoal on paper, signed and dated upper left 'Bellany 84', 57.5 x 40 cm (ARR) Provenance: private collection, UK Note: One of the most celebrated Scottish artists of the 20th century, Bellanys deeply symbolic work contains an unrivalled intensity and power. Using a distinctly Scottish iconography, Bellany works explore questions of the human condition, Celtic history and our relationship with the sea. Alongside Alexander Moffat and the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, Bellany sought to create a renaissance in Scottish culture from the 1960s. Inspired by the symbolism of Alan Davie, his work has also been highly influential on a generation of artists, including Damien Hirst who has been a major collector of his work. Bellanys work is held in collections across the world, including the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Galleries of Scotland. Recent exhibitions of his work have been held at Fortnum & Masons in 2017 and the National Gallery of Scotland in 2012-13.

A George IV Irish provincial silver-gilt City of Cork freedom box by Richard Garde of Cork, of rectangular form with rounded corners, the flush-hinged cover engraved with Cork City coat of arms with garter, Latin motto ‘STATIO BENE FIDA CARINIS’, flanked by thistles, flowers and harps, with coronets to the corners, and scroll thumbpiece, the base engraved with presentation inscription to Lord Combermere:, reading: ‘The Freedom at Large of the City of Cork was unanimously voted to Liet.t Gen.L Lord Combermere. Commanding His Majesty’s Forces In Ireland. Sept. 18th 1824. B Gibbings. Mayor Rob.t Lawe Sheriffs Will.m Crofts ’ with gilt interior, Dublin hallmarks for 1824, (date letter overstuck), dimensions 7.8 x 5.5 x 2.1cm. £3000-4000 --- Provenance: Presented to Lord Combermere and thence by direct family descent. Sir Stapleton Cotton, 6th Baronet, created Baron Combermere in 1814 and Viscount Combermere of Bhurtpore in 1827, had a long and distinguished military career. He served in Northern France and Flanders early in the French revolutionary wars, then in India where he was in action at the siege of Seringapatam, resulting in the defeat and death of Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore. During the Peninsular War, he fought at Talavera, Salamanca and many of the military engagements in that theatre of war. In 1817, he became governor of Barbados commanding British forces in the Leeward Islands. In 1822, he was placed in command of British forces in Ireland, and thereafter returned to India as commander-in-chief of British forces in the sub-Continent, distinguishing himself by the capture of the capital of the princely state of Bhurtpore, for which success he was granted the viscountcy. He ended his military career as Constable of the Tower of London (following in the footsteps of the Duke of Wellington) as Keeper of the Rolls and Lord Lieutenant of Tower Hamlets. He died a Field Marshall, full of honours, at the advanced age of 91. His equestrian statue stands outside Chester castle. This portrait of Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere by Mary M. Pearson was painted in 1825 at the end of Combermere’s term of office as Commander-in-Chief in Ireland, and before his departure for India in June of that year. He is depicted half length in uniform as General Officer of Light Dragoons, with Ribbon and Star of GCB, Stars of Portuguese Tower and Sword and Guelphic Order of Hanover, Peninsula Cross with Salamanca clasp. This portrait was presented by his widow to the National Portrait Gallery in 1872. Freedom boxes were presented to persons who were granted the honorary freedom of a city or town. These were usually distinguished non-residents who had rendered great service in some way; they were also exempt from further payment of tolls. A number of these boxes were manufactured principally by the silversmiths of Dublin and Cork. The silversmith Richard Garde was registered at 18 Broad Lane, Cork, in 1824, and in 1833 at 17, Broad Lane. He was registered at Dublin in 1827, continuing until 1838. Condition Report Light rubbing throughout. Small pin prick dent to front below thumbpiece. Some patches of wear to the gilding visible on the base and small dent to the central upper edge of the inscription. Hallmarks to base and inside lid. Weight 110.9gm.

GUSTAV VI ADOLF: (1882-1973) King of Sweden 1950-73. A.L.S., Gustav Adolf, Crown Prince of Sweden, three pages, 8vo, Stockholm, 22nd January 1920, to [Lionel] Cust, on the Prince's blind embossed monogrammed stationery. The Prince writes concerning Gunnar Wengstrom, a member of staff at the National Museum in Stockholm, who will be going to England for two months to study paintings and drawings, and enquires 'Might I ask you to let him see the collection at Windsor Castle and would it be possible for you to help him to get a permit to see the collection at Chatsworth too?', further adding that he hopes it will not cause Cust too much trouble and explaining that Wengstrom will be travelling at the expense of the museum. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGLionel Cust (1859-1929) British art historian who served as director of the National Portrait Gallery 1895-1909 and as Surveyor of Pictures in Ordinary to the King from 1901-27.
ALEXANDER III: (1845-1894) Emperor of Russia 1881-94. Attractive signed printed large folio copy of L´Illustration Journal Universel, French weekly edition, sixteen pages, 21st February 1885, signed by Alexander II, as Emperor, with his initial `A´ in red indelible pencil to the upper right corner of the front page. The Parisian journal includes multiple and very attractive large engravings, showing to the front page a portrait of Jules Valles a French Author, Journalist and political Activis who passed away a week earlier. The journal also includes articles and engravings relating to Gordon Pasha travels to Chinal, Soudan, etc... and to the Panama Canal works. The present copy was originally bound in a red leather folio volume for the Emperor, alongside other additions of the journal. Left edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG

Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph by Macchio, the image depicting the actor in a close-up portrait pose in costume as Daniel LaRusso from the American martial arts drama film The Karate Kid (1984). Signed in bold blue ink and adding his fictitious name in the movie `Daniel San´ to a clear area of the image. A small oval authentication sticker is neatly affixed to the lower right corner. Pat Morita (1932-2005) Japanese-American actor and comedian, an Academy Award nominee. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of Morita in a half-length pose in costume as Mr. Miyagi, also from the film The Karate Kid (1984). Signed in bold blue ink to a clear area of the image. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of Elba standing in a half-length pose, in costume as DCI John Luther, with one hand raised to his chin in an inquisitive manner, being a publicity portrait for the British psychological crime thriller television series Luther (2010-19). Signed by Elba in blue ink with his name alone to the image. A printed sticker neatly affixed to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person following Elba's appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman at the Ed Sullivan Studios on 24th June 2013. BYRD RICHARD E.: (1888-1957) American naval officer, polar explorer and pioneer aviator who claimed to have led the first expeditions to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. A fine original pen and ink drawing of Byrd by the German-Swiss artist Robert Kastor, executed on a folio (10 x 12) sheet of art paper, the image depicting the aviator in a head and shoulders pose wearing his flying cap and goggles. Signed and inscribed by Byrd in dark fountain pen ink immediately beneath his portrait, 'To Robert Kastor, with best wishes, R E Byrd', and dated 25th February 1928 in his hand. Whitey Schafer (and bearing his credit stamp to the verso) depicting Fonda in a profile head and shoulders pose in costume as 'Brick' Tennant from the American crime film Let Us Live (1939). BALDWIN STANLEY: (1867-1947) British Prime Minister 1923-24, 1924-29, 1935-37. A.L.S., Stanley Baldwin, two pages, 8vo, Whitehall, 17th January 1937, to [Frank] Salisbury, on the printed stationery of 10 Downing Street. Baldwin apologises for being so late in acknowledging 'that most beautiful and interesting book which you were kind enough to send me', explaining that it had arrived at his office when he was more than usually busy and he had not seen it until after Christmas, and concluding by remarking that he values it very much. A very light, extremely minor vertical band of discolouration to the left edge of the first page, not affecting the text, otherwise about EXFrank O. Salisbury (1874-1962) English portrait painter.
GODDARD PAULETTE: (1910-1990) American actress. Signed 8 x 10 photograph, the original vintage publicity portrait depicting Goddard in a three-quarter length pose holding an oversize clutch in one hand. Photograph by Laszlo Willinger for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with his credit stamp to the verso, and issued at the time of Goddard's appearance in the American romantic drama film Dramatic School (1938) in which she starred in the role of Nana. Confidential (1997) which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. An excellent signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of McCartney, the iconic image being a reproduction of Richard Avedon's heavily solarised psychedelic portrait of the musician captured in 1967. Signed by McCartney in bold blue ink with his name alone to a light area at the centre of the image. One very light, extrenely minor smudge to the conclusion of the signature. A pencil annotation in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the General Aviation terminal of Vienna Airport. RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Artist. A fine and good association A.L.S., `Renoir´, two pages, written to the first and third page, small 8vo, Cagne, 8th January 1908, to Claude Monet, in French. Renoir writes to his long life friend Monet `Mon cher ami…´ ("My deaf friend…"), and first asks about his correspondent´s health `Tu me diras si tu as toujours mal à l´estomac, c´est une maladie qui rend triste, il faut vite guérir´ ("Tell me if you still have a stomach ache, it's a disease that makes you sad, you have to heal quickly") Renoir further refers to Vollard, their art collector supporter, stating `Vollard est ici, je le portraiterai´ ("Vollard is here, I will make a portrait of him") Further again Renoir thanks Monet and his daughters for the letters they often send him, and before concluding makes a sharp critic of a colleague´s exhibition, stating `Une pièce que je n´irai certainement pas voir c´est celle de Geoffroy à l´Odéon…´ ("A painting that I will certainly not go to see is the one of Geoffoy at the Odeon") To a post-scriptum Renoir referring to the new year 1908, states `Ce 8 me fait bien vieillir´ ("This 8 makes me feel older") VG Claude Monet (1840-1926) French Impressionist Painter.Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) French art Dealer. DORSET RAY: (1946- ) British guitarist, singer and songwriter, the founder of Mungo Jerry and composer of many of the band's hit singles including In the Summertime. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Dorset in a close-up portrait pose smoking a cigarette. Signed in bold blue ink to the lower white border, also adding the name of his band Mungo Jerry in his hand beneath his signature. A pencil note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the Reigen Live Blues Club in Vienna (March 2017). EX
SENNA AYRTON: (1960-1994) Brazilian motor racing driver, Formula One World Champion 1988, 1990 & 1991. A printed 4to official souvenir programme for the Formula One World Championship German Grand Prix held at the Hockenheimring, Hockenheim, on 24th July 1988, signed by Senna in blue ink with his name alone to an inside page across his German text printed biography and alongside a small colour head and shoulders portrait, the programme also signed by fifteen other motor racing drivers who participated in the Grand Prix including Alain Prost, Jonathan Palmer, Nigel Mansell, Riccardo Patrese, Bernd Schneider, Mauricio Gugelmin, Derek Warwick, Eddie Cheever, Nicola Larini, Pierluigi Martini, Gerhard Berger, Philippe Alliot, Alex Caffi etc. All have also signed across their printed biographies and alongside their colour portraits. Some light creasing and age wear and minor damp staining (the race was held under wet conditions following a weekend of thunderstorms). GSenna, driving a McLaren-Honda, won the 1988 German Grand Prix from pole position and the victory, his fifth of the season, moved him to within three points of Prost at the top of the Drivers' Championship. The Brazilian would go on to win a further three Grand Prix that season and secure his first of three World Championships.
SHERMAN CINDY: (1954- ) American Artist. Best known for her photographic self-portraits. Signed 8 x 10 photograph by Sherman, the attractive self-portrait image depicting the American artist standing in half-length pose. GREVY JULES: (1807-1891) French politician who served as President of France 1879-87. A good vintage signed and iscribed sepia cabinet photograph, the oval albumen print depicting Grevy in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Alphonse Liebert of Paris and bearing his imprint to the lower mount and verso. Signed by Grevy in dark fountain pen ink to a light area beneath the image and with an inscription in French to General Brugere, dated 2nd December 1887 in the President's hand. Some light mottling to the image, otherwise VGJoseph Brugere (1841-1918) French General who served in the Franco-Prussian War and World War I.Alphonse Liebert (1826-1913) French photographer, remembered for his photograph of Alexandre Dumas pere accompanied by his mistress Adah Menken which caused a minor scandal with copies being prohibited from sale.Grevy signed the present portrait on the final day of his presidency.
CROSBY BING: (1903-1977) American singer and actor, Academy Award winner for Best Actor in 1944 for his role as Father Chuck O’Malley in Going My Way. Vintage signed sepia 8 x 10 photograph, the original Paramount Pictures publicity portrait showing Crosby in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in blue ink with his name alone to a light area of the background. The signature is a touch light in places although perfectly legible. FONTAINE JOAN: (1917- ) British-born American actress, Academy Award winner for Best Actress in 1941 for her role as Lina McLaidlaw Aysgarth in Suspicion. A good signed 8 x 10 photograph, the original vintage RKO Radio Pictures publicity portrait of 1946 depicting the actress in an appealing head and shoulders pose. Signed by Fontaine in bold blue ink with her name alone to a light area at the base of the image. A pencil annotation in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the Rainbow Grill in New York on 3rd October 1977 following an appearance by Joshua Logan at the venue. BOGART HUMPHREY: (1899-1957) American actor, Academy Award winner for Best Actor in 1951 for his role as Charlie Allnut in The African Queen. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the appealing Warner Bros. First National Pictures publicity portrait depicting Bogie seated in a half-length pose and holding a tobacco pipe in his hands. Signed in dark fountain pen ink to a largely clear area of the background, 'To Sammy Miller, good luck, Humphrey Bogart'. Some light surface and corner creasing and some light, minor staining close to, but not affecting, the signature and inscription. G
KALASHNIKOV MIKHAIL: (1919-2013) Russian firearms designer, most famous for developing the AK-47 assault rifle. Signed printed 8vo exhibition catalogue for The Weapons of Kalashnikov held at the Artillery Museum of Saint Petersburg in 1999. With various text in both Cyrillic and English and profusely illustrated in colour with images of the various firearms etc. designed by Kalashnikov from 1942 onwards. Signed by Kalashnikov, in a somewhat infirm hand, to the front cover alongside his colour inset portrait and dated 8th February 2000 in his hand. Some light, general age wear, otherwise VG
GAYNOR JANET: (1906-1984) American actress, the first Academy Award winner for Best Actress in 1927/28 for her roles as Diana in Seventh Heaven, Angela in Street Angel and Indre in Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Signed 8 x 10 photograph, the original vintage 20th Century Fox publicity portrait by Frank Powolny (and bearing his credit stamp to the verso) depicting the actress in an appealing head and shoulders pose. EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. An impressive, large signed 17.5 x 23 silkscreen print by Einstein, the image being a well-executed line portrait of the scientist by the artist Joseph Scharl, 1946. Signed (‘A. Einstein’) by Einstein with his name alone to the lower left corner and also bearing the facsimile signature and date of Scharl. Matted in white and framed and glazed in a modern frame to an overall size of 26 x 36. A highly attractive signed image, effective in its confident and bold lines. Rare and desirable in this form. About EX Joseph Scharl (1896-1954) German-born American expressionist painter and graphic artist. Labelled a ‘degenerate’ artist by the Nazi Party, Scharl found it impossible to work in Germany and his immigration to the United States in 1939 was sponsored by Einstein. Scharl was not only supported financially by Albert Einstein, whom he had first met in Berlin in the 1920s, but also in the realisation of various exhibition projects. Scharl often visited Einstein, whom he painted several times, in Princeton and the two engaged in friendly correspondence from 1941 onwards. The years 1944-46, when the present portrait was created, marked the peak of Scharl’s fame in America. When Scharl passed away in 1954, a few months before his friend’s own death, Einstein gave the eulogy at the artist’s funeral.

GILELS EMIL: (1916-1985) Soviet Pianist. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. Scarce signed 3.5 x 5.5 photograph by Gilels, the image showing the virtuoso Pianist in a close-up portrait pose. Signed in bold black ink to the lower white border with his full name alone. VG
MORGAN MICHELE: (1920-2016) French actress. A slim 4to hardcover spiral bound Lavis aquarelle artist's sketchbook previously belonging to Michele Morgan and containing twenty pages of drawings in the hand of the actress, executed in coloured crayons, felt-tip and pencil, the various studies including abstract designs (a couple featuring a duck and other animals), a number of portrait studies of women's heads, an elegant hand, a full-length drawing of a lady reclining on a sofa, a table lamp etc. The unsigned drawings appear to the recto and verso of the pages, most of which bear the circular stamp of Succession Michele Morgan - Shine A Lot, dated 21st December 2017, and originating from her estate sale.
