South Arabia, modern day Yemen, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A striking carved stele made of almost translucent alabaster with a low-relief human figure holding what appears to be two children in its arms placed at its center and a worn inscription in the ancient Yemeni alphabet (also known as Old South Arabian), probably in the language of the Kingdom of Qataban, across its top. Twin blank panels frame the figure beneath the inscription. Size: 3.95" L x 5.5" W x 1.4" H (10 cm x 14 cm x 3.6 cm)The deceased in this part of the world were often represented by anthropomorphic funerary stelæ like this one; it is unclear if this example is a portrait of a known individual or not. Stelae like this one have been found in three areas, one of which was the cemetery at Tamna, the capital city of Qataban. The Kingdom of Qataban rose to prominence in the second half of the 1st millennium BCE because it controlled the trade in frankincense and myrrh, incenses required to be burned at altars during religious rituals further north and west. A haunting and beautiful alabaster object, certain to spark conversation, and a reminder of the deeper history of this understudied region. Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche III-IV, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A bichrome stirrup vessel, hand painted in beautifully contrasting hues of red and white, that is quite unusual in that it features a genre scene of Moche life rather than an individual human portrait, animal or plant representation. Standing in between mountainous peaks of the Andes is a male figure wearing a headdress, wristlets, ear ornaments, and a loin cloth who holds three seed-like forms in his raised right hand that he is perhaps about to toss to from the Andes as an offering to Pachamama. A finely painted mold-made form with intriguing subect matter. Size: 6.5" L x 5.75" W x 7.625" H (16.5 cm x 14.6 cm x 19.4 cm) Provenance: Ex-California Museum of Ancient Art Condition: Intact with expected surface wear and nice manganese deposits. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, late Moche, ca 800 CE. Truly larger than any Moche portrait head we have ever had the honor of handling, a superb and enormous bichrome portrait head presenting an expressive visage comprised of wide open, inset eyes, a pronounced, curved nose with openwork nostrils, a well-defined, protruding mouth with each tooth individually delineated, and carefully modeled facial planes and contours - even the philtrum (vertical groove running from nasal septum to upper lip) is defined. Moche effigy pottery was usually created with moulds; however, each piece was individually and uniquely refined with hand tools and decorated using slips of red, cream, and brown hues. Given his elaborate phenotype with facial tattoos/paint, huge earspools, and an impressive helmet/headdress adorned with a rich variety of stylized geometric motifs, all hand-painted in red on a cream ground, the subject portrayed here was most likely a revered warrior or leader. Perhaps the best known Moche vessels are veristic portrait stirrup-spouted jars, and scholars believe the Moche to be perhaps the only ancient culture in the Americas that produced such vessels. The Moche depicted real people, and furthermore, it has been possible to follow the progression of age and rank of several renowned individuals portrayed at different times of their lives in pottery. One particular face, easily identified because of his cut lip, appears in more than forty Moche pottery vessels. What is remarkable about this piece, however, is that it is not a vessel, but rather a sculptural portrait head with a closed bottom, most likely intended to stand on its own as a monument to the deceased. A jaw-dropping example that has been deemed ancient via thermoluminescence testing. Size: 12.5" L x 15" W x 13.75" H (31.8 cm x 38.1 cm x 34.9 cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Spanish collection acquired in the 1980's; comes with TL report from QED Laboratoire, Aix-en-Provence Condition: Repaired from four to six large pieces. Surface wear with abrasions and chips as shown. Nice manganese deposits. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #118051
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A superb bichrome terracotta vessel depicting an important male standing lord or cazique with a portrait-like face and a focussed, trance-like expression. Note how he gazes steadfastly ahead with those wide-open eyes. The figure is elaborately dressed, donning a jaguar headdress, large round earspools, a red tunic with a decorative trim, and a long white shawl neatly tied around his neck. He holds ceremonial implements in both hands, a double rattle-like instrument in the left, and a kero or sack attached to a strap most likely intended to contain a hallucinogenic substance used during ritualistic ceremonies. A wonderful example of a human effigy vessel representing a significant individual of the Moche! Size: 4.875" W x 7.5" H (12.4 cm x 19 cm)A word about jaguar iconography: Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal Moche god Ai Apec wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals like the gentleman depicted in this example donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually scene jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast. Jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains for Moche rituals and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast. Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San Francisco, CA Condition: Repairs to rim above the jaguar headdress. Expected surface wear and minor slip loss. #117608
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is a striking blackware mold-made portrait stirrup vessel in the tridimensional style, with the shape of the face sculpted as part of the pottery shape of the vessel (rather than painted on). It depicts the head of a very aged individual with deep wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and cheeks. The vessel has a rattle in a conical base with a cut-out "x" on its underside. Size: 4.7" W x 5.5" H (11.9 cm x 14 cm)This would have been a portrait of an important member of Moche society; it is possible - even probable - that there are portraits of him as a young man found in other vessels, as we know of several examples of Moche portrait vessels portraying the same individual at different stages of life! Provenance: Ex-New Hampshire collection, most acquired prior to 1985 Condition: Intact All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
