The lining canvas is old and brittle with tears forming around the tacking edges. The paint layer is stable overall but has suffered from damages in the past including old, repaired tears and impact damage causing losses. There is a network of age cracks present which appear prominent in the sitter’s face due to their age and discolouration. Areas of overpaint cover damages as well as reinforcing elements of the composition such as the wig. The varnish is severely degraded becoming yellow, matte and no longer saturating the paint layer below. There are numerous scuffs and scrapes to the surface and a lightly layer of dirt.
